ANPR won't recognise what car it's on. It'll only ping if there's something recorded against the number itself.

yeah but if theres a traffic car following a volvo and it reports it as a vw amarok...

That’s not how it works. The system scans and throws an alert when it shows something interesting e.g. no insurance, known drug dealer etc.

ANPR on its own wouldn’t have picked it up.

Ive read into it a bit now - apparently they don't even ping now for expired MOT as there are too many cars on the road with expired mot.

ANPR uses a database for insurance checks that not all insurance companies sign up to aswell. I was stopped in the M5 a few years ago and, as it was a Sunday, he couldn’t even phone up to check when it said I had no insurance.

If you look at your Cert of Insurance on the internet, it has a date stamp next to it to prove it’s still active. Apparently, having the actual document isn’t proof as little scally-wags buy the insurance, get the documentation and then cancel the policy the next day.

In my case, he said he’d check the next day, which he did and then called to say that no further action was necessary. As I’d just driven home from Southampton in quite a spirited fashion, I was very relieved!

The bit about the insurance certificate pisses me off because a copper who's determined to give you grief can seize your car because you can't "prove" you have insurance if your insurance company isn't answering the phone even if you show them the only proof you have. It's fucking stupid.
