Reg number weirdness

Post by McSwede »

In March this year we leased my wife a new Volvo S60. We changed the insurance over from the old Jag to the Volvo with the correct registration & car details. Insurance is now up for renewal but when we are trying to get an online quote using the reg number it is saying that the vehicle is a VW Amrok pick up. It even says it's a VW on the DVLA reg checker.

What's the crack for getting this sorted. I'd assume its Volvo (the lease company) who need to sort this but how we stand currently with our insurer is concerning.

I'm assuming the correct details came up by reg when the current insurer took it on and that that the dvla cocked up when changing owner on an Amarok by putting the wrong reg in. A Volvo dealer should have their own system so see what they come up with, if it's correct than you can forward that info to your insurer and the lease company.

It's jusg a glitch.

You need to take the blue pill. Or the red one.

I’ve seen, more than once, cars wearing the wrong plate. Rev had that with his bike, didn’t he? Is it possibly the incorrect details provided to you for the Volvo, with the error passed through to the plates fitted? Since you don’t get the V5 with a lease car, you can’t check.

Weirdly I think my car comes up as a Carrera GT when you do an MOT search online

It's correct on my V5 and also when you do a registration check on the DVLAs site so I've never bothered to get it updated. Nice to know that all their records are reconciled against each other

Outstanding. Surprised you've never been pulled by an ANPR car.

ANPR won't recognise what car it's on. It'll only ping if there's something recorded against the number itself.

Curious - was it one letter out or completely different?

It was supposed to say YY11NNG. They had put YY1ANNG on by mistake.

It was supposed to say CH33SSE. They had put CH14LLK on by mistake.

Etc.

How did you get it insured in the first place, given the reg over the phone before you got it?

Whatever, it's resolved now 8-)

That’s not how it works. The system scans and throws an alert when it shows something interesting e.g. no insurance, known drug dealer etc.

ANPR on its own wouldn’t have picked it up.

I’m not sure how the ANPR system works, maybe it’s mainly used for stolen vehicles or plates which already have a mark against them as my dad drove through London without insurance for close to 2 years (not as bad as it sounds) and didn’t get stopped. There’s actual signs warning that the main road he uses have ANPR cameras too (why do they even say that? So criminals can take a diversion?).

I think the number of uninsured drivers is over 1 million isn’t it so ANPR is clearly not being utilised very well.

What should have been a Y was a V on the reg plate and also on all the lease documentation.

Happens quite a bit, might be worth letting the lease and insurance companies know.
