To make it more convoluted you can have a proper sequential with 3 pedals and flappy paddles. So in effect full manual or full auto.

Not directly in line with the other pedals so does not count.

Nor does a foot operated horn or hight beam switch.

Wasn't' there a Ferrari - a 355 if I recall correctly, with 2 pedals and a full open gate shifter. As you move the gear leaver between, say, first and second, the clutch is electronically activated and deactivated

So a two pedal, semi-automatic manual.

Where's the option for that ???

Daily focussed car for me is auto if I'm living in a city/town with annoying access to driving roads, manual if not.

I'd probably not be so enamoured with the ZF8 if I was still in Scarbs with good driving roads five minutes away and less in-town stop/start traffic. I'm find with it in Pudsey/Leeds as it's genuinely a bonus to not have to be stirring the porridge every three seconds.

Track car would always be a manual methinks, DSG/PDK a 'maybe' depending on how good the dual clutch was vs the manual option (IE I don't rate BMW manuals, the Puma had a better shift than the E46)

Depends on the car. With my cars, the Boxster is manual and the 928 is an auto. Can't imagine anyone wanting an Tiptronic Boxster unless you had no choice for medical reasons. With the 928, the automatic box suits the car perfectly. It has huge amounts of V8 torqueiness (it sets off in second normally) and if you want to have fun, you can use the modes in the box and shift manually.

I was talking to @Jobbo about this and whether I actually miss a manual or I miss the idea of a manual.

The Porsche PDK box now is so quick, reliable and smooth in any mode that I can't imagine a manual being objectively "better". Changing gear on the paddles, I still feel engaged with the car and I'm not just pootling around in auto. I'm choosing the best gear for the situation.

But would I enjoy having a manual gearbox more? Has it just been so long since I've driven a nice car with a manual box that I've forgotten how much more involving it is?

Porsche did one too (the Sportomatic). Not sure that it was a torque converter - but was two pedals with a manual gearlever.

I think I've blathered on about this here before but the 20mph limit actually is pushing me back in the direction of a manual for more engagement even in city driving. A nice 993 would hit the spot...

The point is moot for me in an MX5 because the auto barely existed in the UK and isn't available now, but I don't think I'd miss a manual at all if I didn't have one now. Any 911 or Boxster would always be PDK for me; in my regular browsing of the approved used site, that's the one filter I select first.

I've never tried a manual car with auto throttle blipping and I think I'd quite enjoy that, but it wouldn't make me change my mind. Being a shortarse I have come to realise my seating position in a manual is usually constrained by the clutch; for whatever reason using the full travel of the clutch pedal invariably requires me to sit closer to the steering wheel than using the brake or accelerator.

ETA: I can't change my poll choice but I was in category 2 and I would choose category 4 now. But that does not mean I regret getting the MX5 which I love.

Maybe I’m just very shit but when I Rev match a nice Downchange and it’s buttery smooth, it feels bloody lovely.

I also like to execute a swift Nigel Mansell gear change from time to time. Manual all the way for fun, I’ll never be as quick as I’m just not that great a driver but it’s a lot more fun for me.
