Isn’t there a Japanese term/phenomenon for visiting Paris with high hopes and then being utterly disappointed?
And I believe they now have the opposite of that term for the UK. Expecting a mediocre place but really enjoying it

Funnily enough growing up my parents told me repeatedly how much I'd hate France and Paris as they did. Then when I finally went it was thoroughly enjoyable.
After Gojira playing highlight the Eiffel tower going full laser battle station was pretty cool too.

The French audience are assholes. Booing Tom Pidcock over the line, and again on the podium is such a shitty display of sportsmanship.
Also, looking like the Triathlon might have the swim cancelled because the Seine was too polluted for athletes on Monday.

The Seine was too polluted on Monday for triathletes to train in, so that session was cancelled. Men's Triathlon was originally due to be today, however, that's been postponed because of pollution. Both women's and men's triathlons are now scheduled for Weds morning, with the men's starting later at 9.45am and if the pollution is still too bad they have got Friday the 2nd as a final contingency, before changing the event to a duathlon - which would be a genuinely shit outcome, because that's fundamentally a different competition.
Ironically the officials are happy because it's due to be 35ºC which is good for killing the bacteria, however, is obviously terrrible for competitors competing in that heat.

yeah, i watched that race live and it was awesome - but the idea of booing the winner at the olympics is pretty disgusting.

I'm amazed/sceptical that the pollution levels can change that much (such that it's either safe or not) and so quickly

Yeah agreed - it was pretty bad form all-round. There was nothing wrong with either of his overtakes, the second one right at the end in particular was excellent. Ill be honest, I had thought it's blown it but that's what champions do.
I've also finished watching the Opening Ceremony and not sure I get all the hate. Sure it was a bit dis-jointed in places but it was marvelously French and why not? The French don't give a Tuppenny Continental Fuck what anyone thinks and the ceremony reflects this. There was plenty of 2012 influences in places too. The end part by the Eifel Tower was the most coherent part and the laser show was brill.

I don’t think anyone was genuinely upset about the opening ceremony tbh.
The roasters online can’t see a public event go by without trying to manufacture some kind of outrage about it.
Satanic Gojira mocking Marie Antoinette’s death while the pale rider prowls the Seine is a good one though.

The main complaints seem to be:
- Mickey taking of Christianity when similar against Islam and Judaism wouldn't be tolerated. The Christians are fair game (or more tolerant)
- The Marie Antoinette bit
- The Parkor guy was wet, then he's dry, then he's wet etc but what the hell could they do about that to be fair.

The e.coli pollution in the Seine is a shambles. The water is still too polluted.
They did a test at 2.30am this morning and then informed the athletes about the postponement at 3am, a mere 4 hours before the start time.
They’re going to do the same again tonight, so the athletes need to do all their preparations for race day and then wake up to check if their race is happening in the middle of the night, for the second night running. What an awful way to fuck with the athletes.
