And funnily enough, just this morning, Gavster & I were agreeing that we both like the i8.

I like the marque, just not sure I'd choose to own one. If I get a car at some point I'd definitely try and prioritise other manufacturers.

I made a few memories myself today, spent the afternoon at the services waiting for a low loader



Story is the cambelt was done in the morning at a Caterham specialist, the cars electrics went haywire on the M42 on the way back, then a few seconds later the engine stopped and sounded like a bag of bolts...I shutdown and coasted to the sliproad entrance, definitely a part of the journey that concentrated the mind somewhat.

Got picked up from that dangerous position by an extremely nice fellow kit car owner with an empty race shuttle on the back of his van after he delivered a Jensen in the morning. Turned out he had a Vindicator that dropped a valve last week...

...which is what the AA man thinks is wrong with mine, the belt may have jumped some teeth resulting in some bent valves. It wouldn't start whatever he did which is confusing. I have rang the garage that did the work and they're going to collect it back next week to 'put it right'. Hopefully it's something less serious, maybe alternator related.



I'm debating getting it checked over before they have a look at it. There's a kit car specialist the Vindicator guy and several other people have recommended that's in my hometown and I suppose forearmed is forewarned if there's serious damage and there's some debate about the cause.

Finally got the car back in working order after a couple of further issues... It's getting sold I'm afraid! I fancy something with a roof and maybe some doors

Well, obviously the right car for him is a Ford Galaxy. It is all the car anyone needs.

BMW has finally figured out what's wrong with my car. They need about 50 parts, including 15 from Germany. Once those arrive in 10 days, they'll need to order the other parts from the UK. I'm not getting the feeling this will be a quick fix. Now that parts are on order, they have swapped the loan car for an enterprise rental, which is slightly better but it seems like a lot of faff.

50??!! Are the itemising every single nut and bolt?

Have they told you what they think is wrong with it? 50 parts seems , but yeah, they could be listing every tiny clamp and fitting in that.

I’m not really a fan of whisky, sorry. I used to drink a lot of “Canadian Hunter” whisky BITD, it was cheap and quite light in flavour so worked well to spike my own cans of Coke and wander around without too obviously being an alcoholic

Returning to the previous question, I can offer you a cheap copy of Archers, or some mackerel. Any good ?

Returning to topic, I'm still suffering some electrical weirdness. I already fitted a new battery and that did seem to help but I'd still occasionally get the charge light flickering when stationary. Coming home from a short errand the other day (in the dark) the dash went dim and it shifted itself into neutral when coasting up to a stop and wouldn't go back into gear. This does seem to be a big weakness of the F1 system, if it throws a wobbly you're stranded. After a bit of panic and turning the lights off it went back into gear.

So I left it on the trickle charger overnight and today I connected my voltmeter straight to the battery (which conveniently for this is in the passenger footwell) and watched.

Everything off - 12.8V. This is good, exactly what you'd expect from a nice new battery.

Started the car, let it idle for a bit - 12.0V. This is bad, it'll be a net discharge situation.

Revved it a bit - still 12.0V. Still bad, and slightly odd that it doesn't change with engine speed.

Drove it a bit - stayed at 12.0V. Bad BUT will occasionally jump up to ~13.8V which is OK but really ought to be 14+. Sometimes it dropped to ~11.8V. Mostly stayed around 12V.

I tried turning lights & fan & AC on and off but there was no corresponding change.

So it's very weird that it jumps by almost 2V. It's a lot. I'd like to think it's the regulator as that's easy to change but I'm not totally sure. I don't know what load would cause such a drop - it would have to be something big cutting in & out. If the alternator itself is weak it'd be consistently low ? I'm a bit stumped for now.

All they have said is that it’s internal leak, but not a head gasket. Seems like a lot of parts and daft that they have to be ordered that way, especially as BMW are paying for the rental car.

Yes it’s from enterprise and not been looked after as you’d expect. The stupid noise it makes is enough to put even greta thunberg off EVs.

Weird you've now been given 2 EVs in a row. Is this where all the new unsold stock of EVs are going then? Hire car companies buying them up for cheap.
