Really? I'd not heard that.

If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.

Professionalism in sport has certainly done a lot to thin the "characters" down.
Re: Is Martin Brundle a good commentator?
It’s because modern sports people are driven into their sport at a very young age and it’s all they know.
No life experience beyond the sport.

That and always having to present your best face to the media or you’ll be ripped to shreds. Look at Freddie Flintoff, howled at by the tabloids for getting drunk and going skinny dipping on a beach in Spain in his early 20s. Lewis Hamilton got slagged off for being to media slick, but when he shows any form of character by wearing an earring or having a haircut, he gets abuse.
The general public have destroyed the characters.

TBH I think the British drivers do better than most as far as still having character goes. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button seem(ed) to enjoy themselves.
You could add Kimi and the Australian drivers to the list too.
Although I think Australians have trouble taking anything seriously

Yep, that's definitely the case as well.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 9:44 am That and always having to present your best face to the media or you’ll be ripped to shreds.

They were the dream team as far as I'm concerned, but I liked Brundle.
I was about to say I'm surprised there's not more love for him, but turns out there is and its just the one forum member who's chips he must have pissed on.
Cheers,
Mike.

I’ve listened to Brundle for almost my whole life almost so he’s pretty comforting. Enjoy most of his pieces, think he’d make a good car reviewer.
How about not having a sig at all?

I’d love to know why Gavin thinks he’s a twat in real life.

You might get more luck asking Zonda_ since he said it like.Ascender wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 11:30 amI think we all do....NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 11:06 am I’d love to know why @Gavin thinks he’s a twat in real life.

Martin Brundle's Supercars is on YouTube somewhere, definitely worth a watch as it's all analogue stuff round Oulton Park
His podcast with Chris Harris is very entertaining as well, said he became a good communicator through selling cars as his dad owned a dealership iirc
Re: Is Martin Brundle a good commentator?
Brundle used to write a column for Motor in the 80s. Really good read, since he was doing F1 as well as selling Toyotas.
Are there any commentators these days who aren't originally part of the sport? Ned Boulting comes to mind from cycling, but I'm not sufficiently bothered about sport to be particularly of any others.

Well I was getting confused there!

I didn't say I did, I said I'd heard it. I believe it was Tim who said it.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 11:06 am I’d love to know why @Gavin thinks he’s a twat in real life.
Re: Is Martin Brundle a good commentator?
The wait is now unbearable...
I wonder how Mr Brundle pissed-off Tim... Cut him up on the motorway? Stole his parking space? Took offence at Tim pointing-out he'd left his fog-lights on? Slagged-off his loafers at a civic function?

It’s one of those stories where he probably didn’t stop to sign an autograph for a friend of a friend of an aunts of a cousins relative whilst he was having a private meal at a restaurant with his wife.

Re: Is Martin Brundle a good commentator?
Remember that time I got someone in trouble with Tiffany Dell? I think Shockers had said something about Tiff not signing an autograph or something so I shared the link thinking he’d have a go at Shockers but someone else said he’d gone to school with Tiff’s son, who was a bit of a cunt. I think it got fairly serious. Oops.
