FAO Rich B
FAO Rich B
Afternoon mate,
Dusted off my bike today (not been used in a while) and I’ve a pronounced squeak form the rear wheel hub somewhere.
Pretty sure the wheel’s mounted square. First thought was corrosion on the pad (the rotor is right and tight) but it’s only when coasting, not under drive.
Hopefully is’s nothing more serious in the hub or cassette.
Everything has been oiled.
Any ideas - sorry, but vague I know..

Hi for a ride and see if it goes
Re: FAO Rich B
Maybe it needs a few hard stops, get it nice and hot.

Re: FAO Rich B
If you think it could be the breaks then you could try re-centering the caliper. Release the two bolts holding the caliper to the frame, apply break and at the same time tighten the two bolts you've just loosened.
Re: FAO Rich B
It stops when the brakes applied but then starts again.
Will try a few hard stops later and see if it cures it.
If other news, finally put my DMR Vault pedals on after about 5 years - I usually use spd’s. They are awesome!

Re: FAO Rich B
Could be a sticky piston as it's not been used for a while.
Re: FAO Rich B
Just cycle around with the breaks on - no squeak and you will get thighs of steel.

Re: FAO Rich B
Odd that it’s only when coasting - suggests it’s not the breaks, but then braking stops it. Maybe something in the freehub or maybe just loose cones causing the wheel to run a bit wobbly? I’d take the rear wheel off, make sure the cones are not loose?
Or it could be something else daft!

Re: FAO Rich B
Yeah, I think I’m going to have to take a look at the hub and see what’s what.
Cheers for the reply...

Good luck, it’s usually something daft in my experience!
Re: FAO Rich B
Yeah - you probably don’t remember but the pedals were a RichB recommendation. Long time ago now mind
Re: FAO Rich B
My bet would be the rear cassette, bearing and freewheel mechanism dried out and complaining a little, wouldn’t complain under load, could stop under breaking because you’re slowing down
Re: FAO Rich B
Also turn the bike upside down on its saddle and pedal very slowly, watch for anything moving, if it’s a disk rubbing you should be able to see it if not hear it
Re: FAO Rich B
Might be an old wives take but I don’t like turning my bike upside because of the hydraulics.
I can jimmy a stand though to do the same

Only an issue with shimano brakes if you leave it like this for a few days.dinny_g wrote: Sun May 03, 2020 7:53 pm Might be an old wives take but I don’t like turning my bike upside because of the hydraulics.

Re: FAO Rich B
Take the pads and retaining spring out, see if it goes. If not, you've eliminated the brakes. If yes, clean and refit.
My money's on a dry bearing though.
