40 years ago my (and for a short stint since) my Mum worked at the Marsden as a Radiotherapist. It's all changed a bit now but her mentor was pretty well known in cancer treatment circles back then.

Re. The broken support - screwfix and/or toolstation sell little angle brackets like this - https://www.screwfix.com/p/angle-shrink ... pack/20034 (other sizes available) - pair of those is very good for fixing chair legs etc.

Did consider something like that, but can't see how I can fit them. Post/PM a pic of the broken bit.
