It was a thing of beauty. They basically ran full fuel flow even when they didn’t need it, collected the excess post-fuel flow meter and then added that extra fuel back in when they wanted it. Such an elegant interpretation of the rules.Orange Cola wrote: Sat Feb 29, 2020 12:22 amWhat were Ferrari doing?NotoriousREV wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2020 8:54 pm No, it wasn’t illegal until the technical clarification was issued. At that point, they were in breach of the clarified rule and they stopped using that system.
Ferrari’s team boss Mattia Binotto consistently denied any wrongdoing and the team were not found to have broken the regulations.

I’m certain there was a rule forbidding that before the clarification. Indeed there was now that I’ve looked at it again https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.mot ... 91689/amp/:
“ 5.10.5: Any device, system or procedure the purpose and/or effect of which is to increase the flow rate or to store and recycle fuel after the measurement point is prohibited.”

Re: No F1 thread?
When I see these things, I think to myself that intelligent organisations such as Ferrari and the FIA will have carefully thought out the wording of their statement, and also carefully considered and foreseen the reaction of the other teams, the consequences, and their plan for dealing with them.
However, I've come to realise in recent years that one should never assume that because someone has come to a position of power and seniority, that they have any knowledge or ability. Most are a bunch of blaggers who lucked out, I bet the FIA are no different.

Thing is, no team lodged a formal protest, they just asked for clarification on what they suspected was happening. But now they don’t like the outcome of them not protesting? You’re right, Mito, you’re not the only idiot

Didn’t think the FIA would still bend over backwards like this for Ferrari in this day and age but then again it is led by the slimy ex Ferrari toad. No conflict of interest there at all eh.

I think it’s the right thing to do, if they can’t prove it then put in measures (second fuel flow sensor) and draw a line under it. We don’t want the 2019 results to be ‘provisional’ whilst it rumbles on and on through the process with a low confidence of success.

Re: No F1 thread?
But as the teams said in their response - if the FIA can’t prove whether something is legal then what does that say about their ability to police all the other regs?
The main fool here is the FIA and the fact that they’ve made the rules so complex that they seemingly cannot enforce them.

Re: No F1 thread?
I don’t understand the ruling - Ferrari seem to have breached the rule Mito mentions above - so there should be ramifications. It is not the job of the FIA to try and assess how much of an advantage it gave them - they are supposed to enforce the regs.
Thinking back to the super-sneaky-very-clever Toyota intake restrictive by-pass that Monkey reminded us of in last weeks TG (McRae feature) - Toyota we’re disqualified for that. Which I would agree was appropriate. OK they did that during the season as opposed to after it, but the principle stands.

Rules don't apply to Ferrari.
