The somewhat breathless headline is a bit clickbait-y. They haven’t suddenly banned it, that rule has been in place since the 2021 regs were released 9 months ago.

So Mercedes must have posed that question to the FIA 10+ months ago 🤔
Must be extremely refined by now and offer more gains than we imagine.

Impressive that they managed to keep it under wraps until now then (if indeed they did, some of the other teams may have known it was coming before the test).

Either that or that rule sparked an idea when they read it.

“Hey, this new rule says we can’t change the steering geometry via the steering wheel from 2021”

“Wait does that mean we can now?!”

And the other new rule for 2021 is no furious in-car masturbation for the drivers.

Wait and see the depraved in-car footage this year....

What do you think the in/out steering wheel is really connected to?

Some great comments on the BBC feed about how it will give Mercedes an advantage so should be banned for this season too!

If it's that good, it might give some teams an advantage in some ways... just give up on 2020 and focus on the rule change in 2021. :D

Well Ferrari are very good at this sandbagging game aren’t they. The onboards I’ve seen don’t look great either, Vettel taking multiple jabs at the wheel round every corner, apart from one lap where he was 7 seconds off the pace. You’d think after hundreds of laps they’d have found a decent set up.

Then Sebs engine blew requiring a new one to be fitted.

I don’t think we should be calling it wraps already especially as all the Ferrari clan got schooled after last years testing, but I will say that the 2020 season is shaping up to be a lot more interesting than originally thought.

I wonder how quickly the other teams will realise that Merc won’t dare deploy the DAS in close racing/near other cars on straights where predictable and reactive handling is required to avoid hitting other cars, therefore the best way to prevent DAS is to make sure the mercs are running in traffic on the straights be that through A team or B team orders? To finish first, first you have to finish and not be in the barriers because a back marker twitched when DAS was being used and the handling of the car wasn’t as expected at high speed and all that.

Ted did a piece and he was saying how once the drivers master it fully they can make small toe changes corner to corner. Sounds far fetched but it wasn’t that long ago when they had one arm blocking the F duct and the other arm changing brake bias via a lever by the knee whilst finding time to steer the car.

Will be interesting to see where it goes. I would imagine it's more for tyre temperature management than being able to set the geometry per corner, but I guess we'll wait and see.

I expect they've had the setup on their sim rigs for ages to get the drivers used to the idea instead of just throwing them on track with it, just need to see how it works with full gforce and collect some real world data.

Wonder how well it will stand up to race long use, normally you want the rack as rigidly mounted as possible, so any play could be distracting and cause more issues than the gains. Would love to see the inner workings of it.
Cheers, Harry
