Filler cap is a really simple task. 6 countersunk allen heads hold it on from the outside of the panel and the internal part is just 4 jubilee clips that hold the feed, overflow and 2 breather tubes to the assembly. They're accesible by removing the small cover in the boot that protects the pipes from your luggage. If you already have an aerocap and just want to change the colour over you wouldn't even need to do any work inside, just the 6 allen heads and swap the cap and surround over.

Re. the paint strip and rebuild: Yep, you could just pay more and have them, or another bodyshop do that work. PGM quoted me over £3k to do the syrip down, transport to the paintshop, collect and rebuild. That's why I did it myself. I imagine other places are cheaper, owever I know there are some that are more costly. To drop it off with PGM for them to take to a local (very good) bodyshop and me to do nothing other than turn up, pay and collect it was ~£6k + the parts i needed (arches etc). To do it the way I did cost me less than £2k.

What I didn't do was ask TSK how much it would cost to just drop the car off and have them do the strip and rebuild. In hindsight I probably should as they obviously do it for other customers and seem very good at it.

Also bear in mind my paint was more costly than a normal colour, so you can expect costs for the paint aspect to be lower.

Duncs, I feel you should watch “a race car is born”. Without ever even touching a Caterham filler cap I could have quite easily described the process of changing it in detail from that!

Finally fitted the new exhaust today. Aftermarket Dansk units. No dramas. Seems quite a lot quieter than the original boxes which is a surprise. The originals had been modified with the "Gundo hack" which involves welding in a short pipe to partially bypass the silencer and make it sound sportier without really doing anything, but the welding had started to fail and they were blowing. Quite a lot I guess.

All back together and on the ground to check out the new X74 ride height:



I'm quite pleased with that. Slightly lower without being OTT. And on a quick test drive, tbh, it didn't feel any different to the sport suspension (M030) it came with. I'll give it a better drive tomorrow.

And we'll finish with a gratuitious last pic 'cos I thought it looked pretty cool from the upstairs window this evening:

Longer drive today, the car seems to be working OK :)

First in class (out of 11) and second overall (out of 34).

I only squeaked into second by a tenth of a second from third, but first place was a full ten seconds ahead of me, quite a margin. A pensioner in a 1987 Mini Mayfair. Seriously.

I clayed a car for the first time ever today, it really is as effective as people say. The Mazda's white paintwork had lots of really tiny specs of rust that had settled on the paintwork. I'm not sure if it's from the brake discs of if Ste's dad lived near a railway line as that can cause it too. With a bit of elbow grease and a few hours work the paintwork is now lovely and smooth and ready for a coat of wax tomorrow.

Claying a car is very satisfying. I remember showing my dad and him refusing to believe I wasn’t cutting the paint - despite the suspicious lack of any polishing residue....

Had the infamous smoky start up after a hard drive with the 911 on sat, car had sat for about 90 mins, it was er, somewhat embarrassing/concerning :?

What oils in it Foz ? 0-40 used to seep passed the rings on mine when cold and cause a big blue cloud. 5-40 fixed it and it's recommended by Porsche on cars with a few miles on them.

If you search online there is a Porsche bulletin regarding it.

The engine was rebuilt about 6k ago.

I will use that next oil change, use that stuff for the Loltus engine and box and its good!
