3 years 3 months, 34k miles later and it’s sold... I’m gutted but need to free up the money to pay for building works and try and be sensible for a year or two.

Easily the best car I’ve ever had - fun, fast, practical, comfortable, looks good, etc... I absolutely loved it.

Aside from the obvious <20mpg on SUL, it wasn’t even “that” expensive to run. It only had a couple of issues in its time - one throttle actuator, a battery and a bush or two. Rear tyres lasted half the life of the fronts and weren’t cheap but brake discs still had plenty of life and pads lasted ages (I’ve never been heavy on brakes), suspension had no issues, no engine or driveline problems, just routine servicing. It didn’t even use much oil.

I’m currently in a 75bhp hired Corsa until I sort a replacement.... which won’t be anywhere near as good.

Long term plan is to be back in an M in a few years.

Did you ever do any track days?

I had one the same colour and did 80k miles in it, was a great ownership experience apart from the engine blowing up on the nurburgring.

How much did you buy/sell for? Or would you prefer not to say?

I’ve literally spent the last week waking up in the night about the decision(!) but its the sensible thing to do.

My new (a year ago) job is almost 20 miles away and I’ve been putting off getting something better on petrol for all that time. Potentially more importantly, I also couldn’t help but think doing 12-15k a year on it was just a countdown to a big bill when I’d been so lucky so far. I sold it on 86k miles, so another year would put it over 100k and make it a harder sell.

I never did any track days in it, I’ve never really had the money for another expensive hobby - it was my daily driver.

Money wise, it lost £7k in the 3 years (which was more than I’d hoped) and never cost more that £1-2k in maintaining it (which was probably less than I’d expected).

The e92 is better in every way than the e46 imo, but there’s still plenty about to keep the values dropping. Another few years and they’ll turn I think, the shitty ones will die off and the good ones become more cherished.

Sad times. But fair enough if needs must and I can see the logic in getting out before any big bills.

I was only looking at values a couple of days ago after someone I know wrote theirs off. I was gobsmacked they'd come down as far as they have!

They are rapid cars and lovely handling, in my opinion way ahead of the E46. Although I think tyre technology came on a great deal in the mid 2000s which helped.

The Pilot Cups were awesome but only lasted 4k miles on rear and £300+ each. What were you running ?
