Re: eBay 996 build thread
Finally did my traditional binding trip to Wales. Didn’t have a full day to myself but managed to go to The Ponderosa for breakfast, then on to the Triangle with a quick stop off at the Llyn Brenig visitor centre.
The weather and roads were glorious.

Nice pics I was going to ask if that was a M6 parked next to you, then realised it's a Skoda

One job I knew needed doing was a track rod end. The steering gets vague above 80mph and you get kick back through the wheel over cats eyes etc. It wasn’t bad enough to get picked up for the MOT, even as an advisory, but had been noticed by my tuna (they farm out MOTs to the garage across the road).
I had a little race against a Focus ST yesterday and it was terrifyingly bad at high speed so rather than put up with it, I thought I’d better brace myself for another chunky bill. It turns out that it’s £13 for each inner track rod end and £18 per outer for OEM parts so I’ve ordered the lot. That’ll be my project this week.

I also adjusted the damping on my coilovers today. It was previously a bit harsh which was accentuating the nose bob somewhat. I'd been meaning to do it for a while but wasn't sure where the rear topmounts were and how much interior I needed to dismantle to get the them. It turns out, they're just under a bit of carpet that lifts up.
The BC Racing coilover have 30-way adjustment (0 being the hardest setting, 30 the softest). The fronts were set to 8 (which is what they come from the factory set to) and the rears to 30. I'd often felt that it leaned very heavily on the outside rear tyre when cornering and that would explain it. I've set it to 15 all round now, which feels a lot more balanced and the front feels much more planted. I think being overdamped wasn't letting the springs work properly. I'm surprised at how much difference the adjustment made. I might yet bump the rear to 8, but I'll see after I've done the track rods.

From an uninformed and theoretical level, would leaving the rear setup a bit softer help it squat more under acceleration and give better traction? Or have I been on the internet for too long today?

Yes theoretically, but longitudinal traction is hardly an issue on these and I’m not drag racing it.

Balance is important and by stiffening the front and softening the rear, it’s definitely improved the balance. And it’s stopped MrsREVs tits jiggling painfully, apparently.

You can really get some purchase with a soft rear end. You need to be careful it's not too squidgy though.

To take this discussion to its logical conclusion, I shall purchase a 70s Cadillac as it should be completely unstickable.

Go drive a standard Fiesta ST from 2013-2015 and anything will feel soft after that The 2016- had 30% less stiffness and it made all the difference. I’d love to have an adjustable set up so I can fine tune it, the only problem is you end up wanting to tweak it for each route/road or journey because you know you can.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 3:55 pm To take this discussion to its logical conclusion, I shall purchase a 70s Cadillac as it should be completely unstickable.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying it, thoughts of a V8 must be very distant at the moment?

Thoughts of a V8 in this car are very distant but I definitely want a Yank tank project.Orange Cola wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 5:25 pmGo drive a standard Fiesta ST from 2013-2015 and anything will feel soft after that The 2016- had 30% less stiffness and it made all the difference. Looks tremendous. Glad you are enjoying it, although sorry to hear you had to dial out the tit wobble.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2019 1:37 pm Finally did my traditional binding trip to Wales. I thought you'd softened the front and stiffened the rear
Anyhow, they're jiggling painlessly now, job's a good 'ne.
Re: eBay 996 build thread
You should suggest to BC that they use this in their guidance literature.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 12:26 pm Balance is important and by stiffening the front and softening the rear, it’s definitely improved the balance. And it’s stopped MrsREVs tits jiggling painfully, apparently.
