What I said, for those unable to grasp it, is that prioritising tax cuts for those earning in the top 10% over those on lower pay is unconscionable after 11 years of austerity. If £75k woman just relies on family and friends, she's got another £2k per month to live on. She's not struggling: she has the financial means to make a choice. £35k woman doesn't. If you can't see the difference, you're either incapable of basic human empathy, or stupid. Or possibly both.

I think the point of all of this, is a “one size fits all” assumption to what is a decent salary doesn’t really work for all situations or geographical locations. So saying someone is rich because they earn more than the national average is a bit dumb.

I think we all get that though and are getting tied up in specifics.

I'll set you a challenge: if you can find me someone on £75k who, through no fault of their own (i.e. not making stupid financial decisions), is choosing to not eat so they can feed their kids instead, or in winter is choosing between food or heating, or is forced to visit a food bank despite being in work then I'll believe you that people on £75k a year are genuinely struggling. Until then, I'll assume you're just massively entitled and condescending.

Agonising over paying £2k per month nursery fees isn't struggling.

A retired family friend was basically a full-time childminder to her grandkids until the kids were in school - every day would have between one and three kids with them at home.

I have a 4 and 2 year old in full time nursery and even with the free 30 hours for the 4 year old, "tax free childcare" (2k per child per year), wife's NHS discount, etc it's about £2700 a month. That's the entire take-home for a £42k salary. Most nurses or teachers without a partner's salary would have no hope.

Lots of countries subsidise childcare because it's better than losing productive people who can't afford it. Our eldest did a couple of months of nursery in NZ and it was under half the cost of here.
