BBC Basic was better than Sinclair Basic, and I say that as a Speccie fanboy. Sinclair Basic was constrained to what was in the copyrighted ROMs but I used BBC Basic to write a network e-mail-type program in the sixth form, facilitated by the commands being expandable to address the network.
I had Laser Basic on the Speccie which added plenty of sprite-shifting routines but Basic simply wasn't the way to write decent programmes so it was a diversion rather than useful.
Spectrum 128K Basic at least moved away from the commands being hard-wired to keys so you typed out the whole thing.
ETA: the e-mail programme I created in the 6th form was a graphic example of how insecure Basic is from hacks and other attacks; very instructive to find that out so directly myself as a teenager

Yeah, pron on the Speccy was rubbish so I had to use it for something.
