NCGs

Post by Sundayjumper »

As I believe we call them now.

Two of my colleagues are talking about sports cars. Apparently the Lotus Elise is famous for its poor handling because it spins very easily.

You know what, loads of mags did say that when the S1 first came out. It was notorius for roll oversteer that was hard to recover. Look at a standard early car and they look like dune buggies as they were set up so high on crap Koni dampers. I remember CCC continued to slate it pretty much until the magazine went under.

Also, the 350Z is the best sports car because it's the most reliable.

I remember a mate of mine telling me about a mate of his that bought an Elise new in 1998 and he said it was alright but the brakes are “shit, because you have to push the pedal really hard”

Some may recall my mate buying his S1 Elise and crashing it two days later. Written off but he managed to get a new chassis rebuild out of them. Lost it exiting a roundabout..

Pads made a huge difference with mine. Fitting the CL5+ made them bite much harder.

I know that Bandit guy really well. I got invited into a Sussex Lotus group called TOAD (invite only sub-group of SELOC alledgedly based on driving standards (f*ck knows why I got put forward and accepted  )). Anyway, on a very early morning, very wet run with them he was in the passenger seat of my HPE S1. It was that ride that made him build his own with Steff from Analogue (Stef is also in TOAD).

Im not sure of the full story behind why he's selling it, I think only he knows, but reading between the lines he spent over £60k building it and wasn't completely honest with his wife how much it had cost.

Steff's done a great job of it, he's very OCD. Bandit had Maidstones do the K20 supply and fit. I know Maidstones personally because the founder lived next-door-but-one to my wife's grand parents. I used to see them at social functions over there. In fact way back when, my mother-in-law used to drive the son, who's now in charge of Maidstones to school. They're very pleasant people, but I wouldn't choose them for a Honda conversion. Bandit also chose and spec'd things I wouldn't.

So TLDR, it's a lovely car, but it's not a car for me. Plus I imagine it'll be £AllTheMoney

I will have another when the time's right. I've already spoken to a K20 specialist about it.

Interesting. What would you spec differently?

Sests, suspension, engine spec, engine mounts, driveshafts, gearshift linkage, engine management, wheels, paint colour etc. You get the idea. He's built a car to suit the Euro trips that group do. I'd want something more focused.
