I think they usually chemically dip them because whatever they would need to blast it with would damage the alloy.

Some places don't even dip them , they just flatten, key and re-paint.

Yeah as Harry says, it has to be chemically dipped to remove it. They've refurbed chrome wheels before, but he wasn't keen on ever doing it again. They don't have their own chemical tank as it's not what they usually get involved with, so they use a local place. To get a 20 x 10.5 wheel in, it has to be done sections at a time which takes ages. The surface afterwards can be flakey too after the chrome apparently. He said they did blast a set once but to get the chrome off the wheels ended up badly pitted. They had to put 5 layers of powdercoat on and rub them down between each one to try to get a good finish. At the end he still wasn't happy with the finish.

Bah. Alhambra started blowing smoke on the way home from Somerset tonight. Chugs on tickover and overrun, clears under load. Will investigate tomorrow, but seems symptomatic of failed turbo oil seal

Shame, as it drives fine and was doing 50mpg.

Well, I've had it apart & it all looks fine. Bit of oil mist in the pipes, but nothing out of the ordinary. The vaccuum hose was rubbing on the driveshaft as a clip had broken off, so I've replaced that too.

I'm wondering if it was residual oil in the exhaust that had got proper hot on the long run? Will have to monitor & see. If not, I think it's time to move it on.
