Cheap off-roader
Re: Cheap off-roader
3-doors aren't but then I'm used to the LC I guess. Point taken about driving on the roads but if the off-roading you want to do is 300 miles drive on the road first, road comfort is a thing. Shoguns are capable enough that you don't have to suffer.
Re: Cheap off-roader
The farmer next door has a mechanic who buys tortured bio hazard Shoguns for less than a grand off eBay, services and cleans them to sell for a healthy profit. I asked him what the hardest thing to fix is and he said getting rid of the dog smell
Although most of them are bought by dog people again who don’t mind it.
Most fun I’ve had off-road locally is with the utility vehicle because of its light weight and small size. I’m looking at a Kawasaki Brute for myself now for the summer as there’s a few tracks locally plus I can stick it in my trailer for longer distances rather than sit on a dual carriageway bouncing off the 50 mph limiter risking death.

How about not having a sig at all?

Agreed, but if you're 300 miles away from a muddy field... fuck that shit on the headJLv3.0 wrote: Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:43 am 3-doors aren't but then I'm used to the LC I guess. I'm only giving advise on what people here drive and it goes in this order.
Land Rover Defender.
Land Rover Discovery.
Old Jap trucks, usually old SJ's, and early Jimny's.
Cheers.

Amazing, that's two Pajero Evos posted as suggestions when I'd already mentioned them in my second post in this threadGG. wrote: Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:49 am Anyway, Simon - stop messing about - this is what you need!

Gwaredd, the Japanese called the SJ a Jimny... that's what SJ stands for

Re: Cheap off-roader
I should've guessed Foz's suggestion was an Evo

Re: Cheap off-roader
How about a Pajero Evo?
Re: Cheap off-roader
I heard the Cullinan was very reasonable.
Re: Cheap off-roader
A Rolls Royce Silver Shadow like in Cannonball Run would be good.
Or a monster truck.
Or an Alvis Stalwart.
Wonder why I've never bought an off-roader before?

Re: Cheap off-roader
That was one of my top choices, but I realised they were popular with oil barons in Russia and thought that would be non-U pulling up to the pub in Snowshill.
Re: Cheap off-roader
Now that's some smart thinking

Re: Cheap off-roader
I'm going to have to get a Defender I guess.
Is the TD5 to be avoided?

Re: Cheap off-roader
Disco TD5 on a lift kit ?
I saw an advert for a P38 2.5 Manual Diesel converted on coils with mud tyres for £900 - thought that could be great fun.

Re: Cheap off-roader
Although a Jimny would be more in keeping with the MX5 in the garage (and quite capable too)

Ha! My First Officer is a massive green-laner and was showing me some pics last night. He’s got a ‘95 Disco with lift kit, snorkel and all the underneath protection stuff, which he bought a couple of years ago for £1600. He lives in Dorset and is an area guide for a group called All Terrain UK. There’s a (crappy) pic of his white Disco on their Twitter page with Corfe Castle behind it, he’s got better pics so don’t know why that one has been used(?), anyway Facebook link

May be useful.
Also, you can get Porsche Cayenne S for under £4k, comes with low range, locking diffs etc. Plus petrol V8. I seem to remember they were far better off road than people expected, and could still be used for day to day stuff.

Early ones yes, you need to aim for 2002+ 15P engines
Re: Cheap off-roader
Cheers Nath. I'm actually thinking Jimny but they're surprisingly pricey.
Ian, any Cayenne is going to cost a fortune to run for a few miles per year - and the S had the fundamental issue with the cylinder liners. I'd probably go for a C5 Audi Allroad (not exactly known for being 100% reliable itself) in preference.

Yeah, and it’s just a Tourag in a fancy dress anyway. Hopefully Defender prices will drop when LR finally releases its new version (assuming they don’t fuck it up)
Cheers,
