Your fleet running reports
Re: Your fleet running reports
Re: Your fleet running reports
I misplaced my OBD reader (not the code thing, just a generic bluetooth jobby) a few weeks ago. It was only cheap so I wasn't panicking about it, but it was annoying.
Found it in the works car park. Where it been for...ooh, a few weeks at least. In the rain, wind and snow.
Already pulled it apart and it's clean inside so I might see if it works.....

Re: Your fleet running reports
Sounds like you need an OBD reader for your OBD reader, dawg.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Your fleet running reports
Small win at the weekend - there was something rattling like crazy on the exhaust of the 911. I thought it was potentially emanating from the brackets or maybe the flap in the exhaust rattling around.
Fortunately it turned out to be simply the silver shroud round the exhaust tips had worked itself loose so it took 30 seconds to tighten up once I'd realised what it was.

I've also decided that I'm going to re-fit the centre section of the exhaust and sell the bypass pipes. They are fun in some ways but overall I preferred the better quality of sound on the standard PSE to the added volume. I will miss the cracks and pops though. Maybe I should have gone down the x-pipe which merges the gas flow and apparently sounds smoother... but I'm not going to splash a load more cash on one of those to only conclude it still sounds boomy.
I've now realised that when I took the centre section back home with me, I forgot to pick up the brackets that must have been discarded so I need to buy new ones... £40... each and I need two. Doh.
Oh and if anyone knows anyone with a 997.2 (particularly non-PSE as this would be a good way to get a bit more volume cheaply) that wants bypass pipes then give me a shout.

Collected the 996 today after having the following done:
Major service
Brake fluid, Gearbox oil
Drive belt
New front brake ducts (damaged at Bedford)
New front & centre undertrays (damaged in Scotland)
Underside protection
New centre radiator (started weeping) & coolant change
3 x coil packs
New air con cooling fan (bearing failed)
2 x front trailing arms (started knocking after Bedford?)
Adjust engine mount
Geometry set up
MOT
So, for a ‘first’ service, it wasn’t too disastrous; just normal maintenance for a 14-year old car.
When I first viewed the car, there was some concern about the RMS leak (TADTS) and possible oil leak from the engine bank 2’s base gasket. In fact I got an extra £1k off the price from the seller based on these. I spoke to the technician who worked on my car, he said the car was in very good shape and the underside was ‘as good as new’. He even said that I should be very happy with my purchase. So it seems all is good!
On my way back, I sought out some interesting roads, but unfortunately even though it’s half term, the roads were still too congested for me to have some fun bar a few stretches.
Anyway, the car is also now wearing Cup 2s, so hopefully I’ll be able to take the car out this Sunday and have a good play.

Yeah, really looking forward to Oulton/ Anglesey now

Re: Your fleet running reports
Fiiiiinally got my BMW coding hardware, and it works. Have initially changed things that have been annoying me since I got the car. IE...
Passenger front window doesn't have one touch close (despite having the switch to support it ) - now enabled
Lights only flash on car unlock - changed for lights flashing when unlocked and when locked (I like the visual feedback, fuck you).
Set the roof to operate from the keyfob. It tries bless it, but it seems it hits a low-voltage error - it works fine when the engine is running. Not too fussed about this honestly but it was worth a pop. I'll come back to that one.
Having a deek to see what else I can do with it, but just having one touch windows on both sides has made a horrible itch in my head go away
Who the fuck specs a car with one touch controls for windows on just the drivers side?? Is that the factory default? Is it BMW? Was it the initial customer? Are they soft in the head, or at least, softer in the head than me?
I'm sure there are other interesting things I can do (configuring DRLs for example) but the above is all I really wanted to set up, so I'm happy with that.
I also, while i was in there pissing about, remembered the speed-linked volume changing. Found the key combo to turn that shit off....

Re: Your fleet running reports
Mondeo has a binding front left brake calliper, probably because it's not getting much use now. Will get that sorted this w/e before the O/H takes over driving it in the main in early March, to coincide with her driving lessons starting. Merc is great, although surprised the rear wiper doesn't come on when the fronts are on and I put it in reverse.

Steering rack is fucked on the golf. Vw want £1200 just for the part. Have found a specialist that can fit a new rack for £450 however so will be calling them to book it in.

Re: Your fleet running reports
It’s common. There’s threads about it. There isn’t a recall.
Re: Your fleet running reports
I expect everyone is wondering how my car is doing
Significantly less moist that before
I’d say we’re at 99% dryness
Which when you take into account walking wet shoes in and out of the car at this time of year, is probably pretty decent

Re: Your fleet running reports
Collected the 86 yesterday - recall work took 4 days. Had OEM plugs, oil filter (not included in recall costs, but oil is), 2017 throw-off bearing and a pilot bearing done. Cost was $300 which is about 150 quid. It's not blown up yet...
Mechanic remarked while it was all apart and being touched all over in inappropriate ways that it was 'pretty mint' underneath so that makes me happy. Previous owner was a mechanic who seems amazing some times and other times a danger to humanity.
Loan car while it was away was a Prius C - which once I'd got off the floor laughing actually proved to be really quite a good city motor. Cost $16 (8 quid) to fill it after 4 days of commuting and pottering about which is roughly a third of what the 86 would have cost. The tech feels a little agricultural - you can feel the system working through the touch points in the same way you'd feel a normal cheap car working. But it's not because it's poorly built - this was a 101,000km car and entirely rattle free, so cheaply built maybe. I'd have expected a little more refinement from the system to trick you into feeling like you were 'hybriding' along. Seating position was woeful - to get enough leg room for me, the upper part of my body was way too stretched out, felt like steering position was designed by one person, pedals by another. Seat cushions were 'pilling' up too - never seen that before. Overall, despite being a massive skeptic of hybrids and electric cars I can genuinely see the appeal for city/traffic driving - here commuting means 45-60mins of looking at the back of the car in front, so super cheap running costs and easy auto operation would appeal. Don't know what the battery costs are like for long term ownership though, but I was more impressed than I expected. Still a basic, shit car though. 6/10

Update: another Glaucoma purchased yesterday to replace the one which was written off a couple of months ago. They seem to be getting rarer (hey, we've scrapped one and killed another in the last year or so) but every now and again a low-mileage FSH one turns up; this was even more local than the last, in fact, but £120 more.
