Also, from memory, these readers don't work well with virtual machines because they’re emulating a serial port. If you’re using Virtualbox you need to add the driver in the Guest USB settings, not in the guest itself. I think.
Aaah, that's not a bad point; I'm working on the assumption that VirtualBox has got far better at this stuff than it used to be. No harm in treating it like it's not....

Mito - primarily, I want:
To adjust the global opening settings
Adjust one shot window settings
Adjust the alarm - I want a visual flash when I unlock it.

It's also good for getting decent live data from the engine and other modules. It's not a new car, and it has a few niggles that would be handy to check out.

+1

Car looks great as it is.

Turns out the way VirtualBox handles kernel stuff in Windows and breakpoints means that the VMs will never run the application properly - hurrah.

Time to break the habit of a lifetime and see if I can get VMWare workstation working on here.

I do it to myself, you know - and that's what really hurts. ;)

And I have questioned the veracity of that statement as I don't believe that is a motivating factor at all, and if it is it shouldn't be.

Oh, it's not a primary motivating factor - I just like blethering.

But I do like seeing you getting worked up over it.

For example, I'm sure you'll love to know that the Windows 7 ISO I have doesn't have SP1 on it, so I'm installing that manually. It takes an hour. I need SP1 for VMware Tools to work.

Yawn, etc.

Mito, I had the same capability with the Mondeo and never bricked that. Yes, you can use the FTDI gear to do very low level stuff (it's the same hardware used to do ECU flashes, following some hardware mods) but I'm not fucking with that. I'm literally just flicking some dealer options on and off. Little more.

So, a few weeks ago I picked up some engine flush, flushing oil and new filters for the Mondeo, so today I was doing all that. I'd also picked up some replacement wiring clips for the coil-on-plug coils, as the old ones had got brittle and broken so were being held on by zip ties. Finally, got an aftermarket cat as mine was knackered. Once I've finished changing that (probably tomorrow), I'll take it into the office on Monday to get the visiting car wash bloke to give it a proper valet, then I'll stick it up for sale; (I can't sell it privately in good conscience with a dodgy cat).

Well we went out with this thing after I just caught hypothermia washing it

It is quite cool seeing it from outside with the diff locked as all the wheels rotate at the same speed churning the muddy ground trying to move its bulk.

Some bloke parked his 991.2 next to the 997 this afternoon whilst we were out doing some shopping. Looks like someone pressed 1.25x on the photocopier  (exaggerated by the angle a little)

Just to keep JL moist, I can't get VMware to have it either.

I have, however, found someone who made a VMware player image that apparently 'just works' so I'll try that, and regardless of whether that works or not, I'm then going to drown my sorrows in a bottle of cheap cab sav, as it turns out I've been a bit overspendy this month, so the rest of the month will involve lots of noodles, bread, etc.

Fuck February

Edit:
Necks wine

Seems like the adapter I have doesn't have the right PID/VID (basic hardware identifiers, so that computers can tell what it is).

So I've got to start pissing about with driver INF files to make this work.

Fucks sake.

Necks more wine, goes off to watch a film

Further edit:
Drunken Raith pulls adapter apart

Drunken Raith finds status LEDs that might have helped when troubleshooting.

Sober raith, tomorrow, will probably drill a hole in the adapter so those are visible in future.

Fucking eBay.

Great post. It made me LOL and confirmed that the newest 911 I'd ever consider is a 997.

Dougal - this 911 is close.

That 911 is far, far away.
