I think a lot of non car people don’t. I recently amazed someone when I told them that the reg plate shows the vehicle registration age and location... They thought it was just randomly assigned!Rich B wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:58 amI thought even children and girls understood the basic format of UK numberplates?DeskJockey wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:55 amThe S didn't look like a 5, but I'll bow to your superior geekness when it comes to number plates.Rich B wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 10:28 am

in all seriousness, you must have noticed the prefix/suffix and the current style plate layouts - all with the same order of letters/numbers?DeskJockey wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 2:21 pmClearly not.Rich B wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:58 amI thought even children and girls understood the basic format of UK numberplates?DeskJockey wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:55 am

Actually, I'm confused! Was thinking earlier, how is there a "same order", when you can have private plates?
I get the old x123xxx and the newer xx12xxx style, but there are private plates that have fewer symbols.

Even Danish children and girls? I know I always try to work out a country's format when abroad but it's not necessarily something you can easily perceive.Rich B wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:58 amI thought even children and girls understood the basic format of UK numberplates?DeskJockey wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 11:55 amThe S didn't look like a 5, but I'll bow to your superior geekness when it comes to number plates.Rich B wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 10:28 am

I never cease to be amazed by how many cars are flying around London with a headlight, brake light or tail-light out. Its usually 3 or 4 every journey if you count those just with headlights blown.mik wrote: Sat Dec 15, 2018 1:18 am Just shows how few actual human cops are around these days - would have been pulled within a couple of days when I was a sprogling.![]()
Then again, in London unless you're ram-raiding a shop front or murdering someone, the police pay little attention anyway.
Re: For the FTAO of JL
I got by without a front plate for about 6 months, only eventually mounted it because I couldn’t be bothered to deal with the ANPR parking which wouldn’t let me in and had an upcoming MOT. Can see why almost anything semi interesting in London doesn’t bother with one.

I always found it amusing the when the UK changed to the current format, they said that EU rules were the reason for introducing a local identifier for the first 2 letters, just at the moment Spain did away with their 2 letter local identifiers.Jobbo wrote: Mon Dec 17, 2018 2:58 pmEven Danish children and girls? Our nearest Morrison’s is in Stamford, if you go midweek when the old people are there you get some nice Old Money plates.

All the single digit plates are on cars worth less than a grand. I wonder if they’re just unaware of their value.
