Upgrade / sideways step. Dual 980ti's will give close to the performance of a 1080, only I just found out that the rift doesn't support sli, so they're wasted on me.

I upgraded my graphics card this week. Apparently, the previous card was bought in 2009 (ASUS GT9500 IIRC) so a 1050 is quite a jump.

I've got an R280, which is just old enough to not support Vulkan on Linux, so I'm expecting a serious jump when I eventually pull my finger out and buy some mid-range card at some point soon.

R280 goes back to the 7900 series of AMDs if I recall correctly, which is...kinda old.

Are graphics cards getting insanely expensive or is it just me? It doesn't seem (or at least, feel) that long ago that £250 got you fairly cutting edge stuff, but the 2080Ti is £1200....1200!!

Yeah, they're going silly, and the new ones being so expensive means older ones are still worth as much.

I was hoping all the new 20 series cards would mean I could pick up a second 'cheap' 1070ti to have a mess around with sli. Most of the secondhand ones are as expensive as the brand new one I bought about three months ago. Same with 1060s, still haven't seen a new 1060 6gb for less than I picked one up from amazon back in august for my step sons build.

Up until 6 months ago I was using a Core2duo with a gt610 which I think cost me £30 about 8 years ago. Decided I didn't want yet another console cluttering up the place so built a pc. The jump to modern games and graphics cards was pretty mind blowing!

Cryptomining is still keeping card prices high AFAIK.

And using as much power as Switzerland, globally, to churn out math.

No, really.

Thought that had all but died in the last six months as cards are now back to rrp, and ram has dropped a fair bit too.

Have a look at the evolution of Bitcoin's value and it will make sense that the interest in mining it has dropped a tad
