I love breaking the speed limit

Post by NotoriousREV »

But sometimes I drive well under it too. It's almost like I have the ability to judge the correct speed for a given situation.

Speed limits, by their nature, are set for the minimum standard. Apparently, this means it's safe for a 17 year old, fresh from the test centre having just about scraped a pass, in a Vauxhall Viva with drum brakes, and on crossply tyres that are on the legal minimum tread, in the rain, at night to do 70 mph on the motorway, but it's unsafe for an advanced driver with years of experience, in a modern car with all of it's safety and driver aids, on good tyres to do 71mph in broad daylight.

Discuss.

I agree. I tend to ignore the limit itself except in the context of the possibility of being caught, and judge my actions according to the conditions.

Much like parking. Anyone else here like parking on double yellow lines?

Anyone who parks on double yellow lines should be shot in the knees.

Only disabled people should break the speed limit.

But only if they are rushing for a parking space that Johnny Fullyablebutselfish is clearly trying to weasel into it first.

When I first moved to England, MY personal limit was always 99mph on the motorways under the (hopefully) realisation that back then, being caught was fairly unlikely and at that speed, I shouldn't lose my licence outright. There also seemed to be a lot less traffic back then.

I don't stick to 79 now because I feel that's the safe maximum, it's more the likelihood of being caught. If the limit was 80, I'd probably do 89 etc.

However, I wouldn't feel safe doing near 100 nowadays due to the huge amounts of clowns on the road these days.

All personal preference though - if you want to go faster than the 70mphg limit then go for it. I wouldn't judge...

I got caught for speeding in Yorkshire on a national speed limit single carriageway road- 74mph I think I was clocked at. Reason was I had overtaken someone on a long die straight section of road, on a perfect summers day with perfect visibility- conditions couldn’t have been better, but apparently I should have overtaken that person doing 50mph at 60mph and stayed in the wrong side of the road for as long as possible......

I tend yo set the cruise to an indicated 79 on motorways too. True speed 76mph. Anything else just feels too risky in terms of likeliehood of getting done. :(

Elsewhere I stick rigidly to the limit. Particularly in the Highlands.

I just drive at the same pace as everyone else, unless everyone else consists of women, gays or mentals. People generally seem to crack on OK so it's really not that difficult.

If I'm going to plough into anyone and kill them, I make sure it's 1 mph under the limit as that appears to be acceptable given the latest round of autism displayed on here today

I drive as fast as I possibly can at all opportunities. I also drive an very underpowered which is why I've not been nicked for speeding.

It's very possible. I think you were making a sensible point using irony but I have replied to it as if you were serious. Is this right?

I'm really strict in 20, 30 & 40 mph zones as a rule and less so everywhere else where I tend to drive to the conditions. I can also neither confirm or deny when the speed limiter kicks in on the M140i or indeed how quickly it feels like it gets there if it were to do so. 😂

TBH, most of the time on motorways nowadays I very seldom go over 80 as I just chill out and waft serenely to my destination as I can't be arsed with the constant speeding up and slowing down that is required should you want to do 90ish, nevermind the hefty fines that have been introduced.

Having spent the last two weeks in Germanistan, I have more and less respect for the derestricted autobahns than before.

More, because I applaud a system that empowers its users to use their own skills and intelligence in determining what is right for them, and less because fk me do some drivers make the most of it.

It really does take some getting used to, and it gets abused as well. So who knows. I do wish I had the Audi here of course, but mainly to try and get through the fucking snow :D

Weren't the speed limits set many moons ago for fuel saving reasons rather than a specific safety based speed?

In any case I'm not biting. :)

My battery range drops dramatically if I go above the national speed limit, so I tend not to do it any more.
