Impetric

Post by mik »

I was explaining tyre sizes to my youngest recently - to his confusion. They do have a particularly 5hit time in relation to the mix of metric and imperial. :?

I know there was some dalliance in metric wheel diameters in the 80’s but it’s a bit mad that - 30 yrs on - the entire automotive industry still uses imperial for wheels. 😕

Miles per gallon for a fuel purchased in litres or a different kind of gallon always amuses me. We really don't like change.

I guess it’s easier?

In Germany, do they advertise 20 inch wheels? Or do they advertise the metric equivalent?

tyre width in mm, wheel radius in inches. It's a genius solution.

I find it confusing that you've used a forum Smiley, then an Emoji from your phone.

It's annoying in racing games which don't have the bizarre English mix.

I like my vehicle measurements in mm and kg and my speed in mph. Most force either full imperial or full metric 😂

Fuel in gallons. Power in bhp. Torque in lb/ft. Temperature in Celsius. Weight in kg. Fuel economy in IDGAF.

Oh and speed in kph as I've done a lot more driving in kph countries than mph ones. Also steering wheels should be on the left to allow changing gear with my right hand, but that's a different topic.

And miles are too big.

I find F1 most annoying for this with the HUD speedo's overlaid on the cockpit in KPH.

I weigh everything in kg and measure everything in mm/cm etc. except people. People are stones and pounds, and inches.

I now have a mental image of you with a set of scales and a notebook compulsively checking the weight of everything in your office. Kind of like Ste on a bike or car build post.

That mostly. I measure distance in miles. Apart form everything I do relating to my work which is metric. And I still can't directly equate between the two i.e if someone told me their house was 50km away that would mean nothing to me - I'd have to convert it in my head first.

We're the lost generation

ETA - the only thing I have no issue with is temp in either C or F. I *get* both.

You definitely won't like Swedish miles then.

US gallons and UK gallons... Thought the 1 gallon sized snow foam, shampoo and wheel cleaner were very cheap online then got the products and realised they’re in US gallons. D’oh.
How about not having a sig at all?
