The Spy Who Dumped Me

Enjoyable nonsense and Mila Kunis is still an absolute honey.

Also rather oddly, I watched Tag after it - it was OK - but both films featured Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm by the Crash Test Dummies. Most odd.

I’m not sure on this, so spoiler alert........

It seemed more like a movie showing how Neil was a heartless robot more than anything. The scene where he left the bracelet was nice but as soon as he put it in the drawer you knew it was going to the moon. I was expecting something good from Gosling but maybe the character he played didn’t let that happen. Yes he cried but it didn’t move me, it was odd.
The Apollo launch didn’t grab me, as one of mans greatest achievements and the energy involved, they could have done better I think.
The X15 start, too much of a close up, it didn’t make me feel like I was inside the cockpit, it was just a few minutes of blur and not much sense of speed.

I loved the Apollo 1 scene, I’ve watched and read about it and really liked how it wasn’t hammed up for Hollywood, the final part where the door bows out was very telling, brilliantly captured. You can completely believe how they reacted in the movie. It’s a horrific thing to happen but it saved lives as after that the command module was totally re-designed and how NASA worked then changed.
The switches, they were old, dirty etc but this was because wherever possible they used actual parts which had been to space. It didn’t match the scene too well due to looking old but knowing these parts had been used up in space and for the roles the movie used them for, many awesome points.
The recovery after docking with the Agena, the final stage of the Gemini project, it was portrayed well and showed why Armstrong was chosen, he is part human part robot.
Overall, some great bits but 6/10, I expected more but all I got out of it was the feeling that Armstrong was a knob.

Based on what I know of him from various books, it sounds like Gosling has nailed the portrayal

Spoiler alert: Armstrong might have been a knob, but to overcome the death of your young daughter and then to be the first person evar walk on the moon makes him a CAF guy in my books.

No doubt he was an incredible human being but it was still a disappointing film.

Armstrong was a bit of a bore, but who else would you want piloting the Eagle?

I thought the film was very good. Gemini 8 launch was terrifyingly industrial and the roll after docking was nauseating on the big screen. Otherwise it has all the other elements you'd want, done well. Flying bedstead crash, X15 which looked incredible and deaths of astronauts handled delicately.

I was surprised they didn't show re-entry (fnarr) but that's been done to death by various films.

I'm not sure how they could've done a better job of it. Shame it bombed, I was lucky to catch it at the IMAX, it was going off the next day in favour of a bender 😡 [/evostick]

Bohemian Rhapsody

Once I got my head around the fact it was not a documentary I enjoyed it tremendously 8-)

The crimes of Grindelwald it's not a bad movie and has some fantastic moments, but bloody hell could it have done with thorough editing and JK Rowling not phoning it in.
They could've ended up with a twenty minute shorter and much better movie. Fan edit should be far superior.

Speaking of bad movies I had cause to idly revisist The Matrix reloaded & Revolutions and damn me judging them as a set of stinkers for the last fifteen years but they haven't actually aged badly at all. I'm thinking a decade of exposure to Michael Bay style ADHD action films has thrown quite a flattering light onto the two Matrix sequels. The car/bike chase in Reloaded is absolutely cracking and even the finale with the armourless mechs versus melee combat robo squids doesn't seem quite so ridiculous once you've experienced Optimus Prime riding a T-Rex.

Nicolas Cage in a cheesy horror gorefest. A proper swivel eyed madman performance from Cage and a suitably bonkers story to go with it. I thought it was great.
Watched this at the weekend. Not quite sure what I was expecting, but it was absolutely great. Visually narcotic, with a first rate soundtrack and full throttle performances across the board (especially from Ken Barlow’s son), it’s definitely worth a watch. Even in spite of Cage.

You Were Never Really Here

Joaquin Phoenix in a typically brooding role as a hired gun who winds up embroiled in a unsavoury trafficking ring scandal. Quite unsettling in places, particularly with some of the more unflinching shots used, it’s a fairly intense film but well worth the effort.

Ross - that review of a Cage movie is incomplete and you know why. Fix it, please.

That is a good movie. There's been a real resurgence in that type of intense, unsettling film making over the last couple of years.

Venom

Could have been way better, but honestly it's pretty enjoyable. Tom Hardy, mostly is what makes it fun.

Worth a rent. Needs a sequel that doesn't get cut to buggery though.

The Predator
Feels like a b-movie love letter to the franchise. I've seen it get slated, but I don't know why, it's a bit of a laugh.

If you worship the original then you'll probably hate it, but then if you worship any film you're probably a bit of a sad cunt.

The plot is a bit silly, but treat it as a bit of fun and it's OK.

Another 6/10 but not such a solid one.

Wonder Woman - Bit late to this as I was looking forward to it and it had good reviews but what a sack of shit. Remember reading last year that it was a wet dream for feminists (wonder what they thought of the opening scenes with the island full of porn star perfect women) where a single woman independent of men tries to stop WW1 - a great fuck you to all the people who died during the war and conveniently ignored all the ordinary women but ignoring that minor point she spends the whole movie being dragged around and guided by a man, is thick as shit and mentally weak.
And furthermore the mixing of mythology, history and fiction has left me with 2 confused kids who also got pretty bored
How about not having a sig at all?
