Discussion point - Middle/Outside lane hoggers.

Post by scotta »

Scenario -

You are travelling on the motorway. You have cruise control set to 70. You are in lane A and have been for miles. You are approaching some imbecile in lane B or C travelling at less than 70. Whats the correct legal procedure?

Obviously if lane C is free you can go around them that way!

Highwaycode says if you're following the flow of the traffic you can undertake but not sure about how that is perceived.

If they're doing less than the speed limit in Lane B, I will move over to C and then back to A

If they're doing less than the speed limit in C, I will just keep in Lane A.

(that's just what I'd do - I'm not saying it's correct)

It's rarely that cut and dried though as they're always other road user to consider and factor in.

I think it’s only frowned upon if you’re already say in lane 3 then go to lane 2 to undertake and return to lane 3.
If you’re not speeding just carry on in whatever lane.
How about not having a sig at all?

Depends on how much I trust that vehicle to not move across on me. If I’m on the bike, I’ll nearly always go to lane 3 and then move back over. I’m more likely to stick in lane 1 in the car.

If you do stick in lane 1, be aware that legally the onus is on you to complete the manoeuvre safely. There hasn’t been a specific offence of undertaking since the 70s but you could face a due care and attention charge.

I presume if you're in lane 1 on your bike and the slow mover is in lane 3, you'll just blast pass, assuming lane 2 is clear ?

Nope. And the police seem to be more interested in punishing the middle lane hogger using the due care charge.

I used to pull out to the fast lane :P to overtake, flash them if at night. Nowadays I just cruise past them on lane 1.

There are so many of the blithering muppets. Instant ban! Would also solve the congestion issue.

Highway Code says as long as your speed is constant passing on the inside is fine. Why is there not an option to throw a banana skin at them so they spin off and explode (in a small contained fireball so as not to cause collateral damage)

I concur with most of you, if they're lost in the outside lane and there's room to safely waft past I will. I used to rage out to the outside lane and try and shame them but that's a mugs game, these idiots have no clue and get angry when you wake them up.

I just continue on my way and give them no more thought once passed.
