What to do with Alexa

Post by V8Granite »

Hi all,

I’ve justified getting an amazon Echo as we just bought a robot vacuum (borrowed one from a friend for a week, greatest device we have ever bought for the house) and I can now tell it to clean the house while in a vegetative state, which is awesome.

But, apart from getting clever bulbs for the living room, what else do we do with it?

I see I can get colour changing led strips I could put by the kitchen kickboards and tell it to turn music on but what else is there?

I’m forcing myself to engage in modern technology more but am a Luddite, it took me long enough to embrace the ratchet spanner’s so anything full of invisible death rays (electricity) I’m a bit stuck.

Also we were told that our eldest was lacking in computer skills a short time back so want to not keep him in the 90s, even though life was better then 8-)

I would recommend putting it back in it’s box and getting on with your life.

Now where’s my tinfoil???

Just do what everyone does with them.

“Check this out, I just got an Alexa, hey Alexa, hey Alexa, HEY ALEXA! Eh, It usually works [gets up and goes and presses button] hey Alexa, HEY ALEXA, h....” etc.....”

Things I do - unlock BMW. Turn off all lights downstairs at night with one instruction. Call the kids down for dinner. Set timers for cooking, exercise etc. Turn on Xbox. Asking it questions; How long to work at the moment? Weather forecast. Basically, shit I’d previously do with my phone, but now am too lazy to even pick it up! Open the Alexa app and look at the skills available.

Kids also use it with their homework, set wake up music, change the light colours and message me when I’m away (usually “can you get me...”, but that’s not Alexa’s fault!).
Cheers,

Ian

Sounds no different to what Siri can do.
How about not having a sig at all?

All good things as I try to not have my phone on me all the time now. It's very cathartic to be without it, it's only always on me in the car.

I'll have to see if my TV supports it so we can hide a remote away as well.

My eldest now tells Alexa to play "Shout out to my ex" by Little Mix apparently.

I may have shot myself in the foot with this purchase.
