FAO people with dogs

Trying to work out how to keep dog in/out of kitchen area. Looking at baby gates, but there's no proper door on there as it's a kitchen diner. Just a passageway 97cm wide. Also baby gate isn't exactly a nice 'thing' to have in the dinning room.

What do you lot use? Would like something easily removable and preferably made of wood..

Best I could find to not look like some sort of cage, but it's still something I'd rather not have. I'm interested in seeing anybody else's solutions.

We used a baby gate. Sorry.

It was a very plain white metal one, folded back almost flush with the wall when not in use, definitely easier than something you have to move around every time.

EDIT - very similar but not quite identical to THIS.

Top tip - if you attach it to the wall very slightly off vertical, it will naturally swing to the "open" position when not in use and then stay there.

OK, went with this in the end. It will do for the next few months. Importantly, I think I'd prefer something I didn't have to step over, and that will only be used on the rare occasion, not every day, so I'll be able to take if off easily.

No need to keep them in kitchen.

Had to buy a latch to keep them out (when house alarm is on) as newdug can open doors

Crate training, no need for gates or anything like that.

Ours has been upstairs twice, once when his arse was going to explode and he told me he really needed to go out at 3am. The other time while on a bear hunt.

Also he never goes on furniture etc.

It was the absolute best thing we did with him training wise. Also he was house trained after 2 weeks or so and we’ve never had an accident since.

Dachshunds shouldn't descend stairs because it can really f--k their backs up. Since one of ours has already had IVDD, keeping them from going upstairs is the way to do it. Seems quite common.

We kept ours downstairs because the cats lived upstairs and they didn't get on well together.

Now the cats are gone we've taken the gate off. The dog knows she's not allowed upstairs.

Same - but we have a crate for the pup when were asleep or out.

I'm for a crate but the O/H is against them. I don't think they're cruel, and neither do lots of online training resources.

It’s a safe place for them if they just don’t want to deal with the hustle and bustle of the house. When our boys are being a bit rowdy Flash just gets up and wanders over to his bed.

Dogs need leadership and a place, don’t be coochy coo, be firm and a leader and they will relax and feel safe in your house.

Just as Mik, he had his gun dog trained which is a pretty regimented way of being trained and I bet he wouldn’t have it any other way?

Oh and if you put a coat on your dog a fairy gets bitch slapped, remember this.

All of them love the crate. When the pup is not in the crate the big dog goes and lies in it. Same when we had our old dog holly. She - despite being 12 still went and lay in it.

Deffo not cruel. 100% the way to go.

Stick the dog, the wife or both of them in a crate until you can trust them to do what they're told.

She goes on and on about Dr Vet, or Dr Pet or something - a YouTube animal specialist. He really recommends crate training too, and I can see the benefits. The dog purchase is more being pushed by her than me though - I'm a cat person really.
