Bye bye Theresa
Re: Bye bye Theresa
I'm not claiming this as fact but I'd wager it's tied to my flippant statement before. European elections have never really been taken seriously here so the calibre of MEP isn't great. We only have 2 MEPs among the top 100 based on voting record according to this https://www.votewatch.eu/en/term8-votin ... stics.html.
We can shout at the EU all we like but if we don't have the people there doing the work then it's not going to do us much good.

we get the politicians we deserve etc ...
you're absolutely right though - we've never taken the European Elections seriously, an expression of UK attitudes towards the European Union, long before any referendum ??

Re: Bye bye Theresa
Ooft, just checked the bottom 100 and we had 27 of them. Mostly UKIP arseholes unsurprisingly.

Dinny may still have a valid question though - assuming we're as we were, do we have any more influence than any other nation in the EU? Genuine question and not trolling or looking to argue.
Re: Bye bye Theresa
He was just challenging GG, wasn't he? Tbh this thread is a bit much
Re: Bye bye Theresa
As far as number of MEPs goes we’re joint third with Italy behind France and Germany. So if everyone turned up for work it would be as Rev said.Swervin_Mervin wrote: Fri Nov 16, 2018 5:32 pm Dinny may still have a valid question though - assuming we're as we were, do we have any more influence than any other nation in the EU? Sorry for keeping the thread going JL, I had to lock up at work tonight and I’m bored. I’ll be home soon and you won’t hear from me till Monday

Brexit is a complete and utter disaster no matter which way you look at it.
On the basis that all of the major campaign promises by the Brexiteers have been proven to be either outright lies or at best highly speculative with no actual facts, plans or strategies backing them up, that should be enough to warrant a second referendum.
That leaving the EU has the potential to split Britain, that should be enough to warrant a second referendum.
That all the UK citizens living in Europe didn't get a say, that should be enough to warrant a second referendum. They might not live here, but they did and contributed throughout their lives, many still do.
That all the EU citizens living the UK didn't get a say, that should be enough to warrant a second referendum. I might not be a citizen, but I have contributed enough to be given a say in the shaping of my future. So have the three million others who are left wondering what their future holds. A lot of these people have valuable skills and abilities that the UK can ill afford to lose, so even from a selfish point of view, Brexit is a bad idea.
I am wondering how much of the current mess is down to "first past the post". It would appear, that by design it creates a large group of disenfranchised voters (why else did someone keep voting for Nigel?), whose votes will never matter. It isn't just the fringe votes, but also anyone living in a safe seat, because the contest is never there. Having grown up in a country with PR at least my vote mattered. Yes, FPTP keeps the "undesirables" out (or in, depending on your point of view), but that isn't true democracy and could, it seems, lead to worse things happening. There were plenty of people talking about it being a protest vote for it to be worth studying.
What is clear is that there is still no consensus about what Brexit even means or how it will impact the UK. Britain no longer rule the waves. That ship has sailed, or rather isn't sailing anymore. A significant part of the UK's current position in the world is because it is part of the EU and to a lesser degree the Commonwealth - it is a highly connected place that can act as a gateway to many other places while having historical links and being the home of the Lingua Franca of global trade. That carries value, confers status and importance.
Leaving the EU means that the UK will be outside the most important of the two groups and that will, by default, diminish The UK's ability to negotiate - who would give the same level of access and benefits to a much smaller, less connected player that can't offer as much back?
I am sad and angered to see what is happening leading up to the exit date, and fearful for the future of your children. They will, as Rev has pointed out repeatedly, live in a smaller place with fewer options if Brexit happens. And while much can be made of the irony that those likely to be hit the hardest, were the ones most likely to vote to leave, almost everybody will be negatively impacted one way or the other.

I look forward to your proof that I'm a 'remain' voter...GG. wrote: Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:32 amCorrect but as Duncs has shown, many Remain voters were also unaware that there was no true "status quo" option - the journey of the EU from EEC to its current state shows it is in reality on an inexorable path of progression towards "ever closer union" - its their mantra for god's sake. If people in the early 70s had a time machine and were able to see what the EU would become in 2018, I'm pretty sure the first referendum would not have been a yes, either.ZedLeg wrote: Fri Nov 16, 2018 11:11 am More people answered that they didn't know or care than said they definitely wouldn't though. You could argue that the issue is one of education than people not wanting it. Which is the issue with the whole referendum, a lot of people didn't know what they were voting for.
Re: Bye bye Theresa
I’m not saying that Brexit is all about sending people with funny names and accents back where they came from, but number 1 on Theresa’s Brexit sales pitch...

Also top of the list of people I'd like to see viciously gang-raped, torn limb from limb, devoured and subsequently violently shat out by a marauding mob of silverbacks on methamphetamine.
That said, I feel the same way about most politicians.

Basically I find myself pretty much daily, wishing that pilot hadn't been quite so good/lucky. Ol' Nige could have been a mangled ruin in a smoking hole in a field somewhere, and forgotten by now.

Also, if he had died, he'd probably be treated as a martyr.
I think a permanent vegetative state, ideally with awareness but not motor functions, would work best.
