As always there's lots of other bits I would love to have done, like the disk backplates, driveshaft boots, caliper rebuild etc, but where do you stop? It was only supposed to be a set of bushes

I’ve got the bushes on the Audi to do in the spring and that looks like a brilliant finish.

Just a rough key and paint or did you need to primer it ?

Just very thoroughly wire brushed then wiped with thinners to remove dust and grease.

A very light and thin coat left for 15-20 mins until it starts to get sticky, then you can do a proper coat.

I’m giving up on cars......

The Defender needs an MOT so I got some welding done that it needed and went to my local MOT emporium. They were fully booked so I found somewhere else and booked it in.
Sadly they don’t do a class 7 MOT (it’s officially 3050kg plated weight) so that was a bust after turning up. I never realised smaller commercials needed special MOT stations.

The TT I finished, just the brakes to bleed so I booked it into the same MOT garage. After bleeding them for at least half an hour and finally getting a good pedal I heaved on the brakes in the garage before driving for the test and the rear Caliper seal blew, I’d rebuilt these and the housing was fine, piston fine but I’ve either missed something or it was a dodgy seal. Either way faith in them is gone so 2 new rear calipers purchased, after first being given the wrong ones. Calipers fitted and bled but can I get a good pedal, can I balls!!

Off to a KIA garage and then to get some brown slacks.

Looks good Harry. I'll try that technique myself next time with paint.

these issues seem to be the cars fault - you cocked up the booking and rebuilt the brake wrong! ;)

Nope, I checked through all my MOTs and they are all for a class 4, my plated weight is 3050kg and GVW is 3495. Looks like I’ve been getting the wrong MOT since 2010

The caliper, I’m not even looking at them, just getting my exchange money back

Weren’t Defenders in Class 7 as it allowed them to get round some of the crash tests? Mine is down as a commercial vehicle as my road tax is around £240 despite being a 7 seater with windows from factory, and whenever I use the Dartford crossing I pay the rate for vans and good vehicles.

Made some brake pipes,

Put it all back together, bled the brakes, adjusted the handbrake and took it for a drive to make sure nothing fell off

It's lost enough negative camber that I've had to take my spacers out so the tyres don't rub. Bad for the stance, good for not chewing tyres.

The eccentric bushes were a pain to try and set ( baring in mind I'm doing it by eye ) I'm tempted to put some slotted adjuster tabs on the beam which came out as it looks an easier way to set them up. I've no idea where the geometry is, but it looks even side to side, and the steering wheel still sat straight so it can't be crabbing too badly :?

Will give the calipers a clean up and paint soon as I've got a pair of calipers to arm flexi hoses on the way as well as a pair of rear droplinks.

Annoyed I didn't get time to clean the driveshaft joints, but was starting to panic about getting it all back together, and happy with what I did do.

Looking very nice Harry 8-)

My Compact update:

I've got some vented front discs & matching calipers on the way now, from a 323i, to replace the solid front discs currently on there. The rear discs are solid too, but at least they're not drums like the fully base-spec cars received. Once I've stripped a bit of weight from the car I think those will be OK for my use. I'm not doing high speeds on a track.

I've ordered some bucket seats & mounts - that will save a bunch of weight too.

I asked about a cage but the lead time from Safety Devices is currently mid-Feb !! I'd like to get the harnesses in ASAP so I might just get a bar welded in across the rear turrets. It'd be no bad thing anyway, stiffening up the back.

I've also recruited a shady forumite to be my co-driver ;)

The headlights on the 'egg seem pretty pathetic so I've splashed out on new bulbs. £50 each !! But they're meant to be super-duper so later today I guess I'll find out.

They made a notable improvement on the ‘vora. Would definitely recommend.

If I was buying today however I would be unable to resist spending anothe £40 to get the even-brighter Xenarc Laser* versions.

I put the 6000k Xenarc ones in the 6 series when replacing the lights as I got used to the more blue hue in LED lights and preferred it. Still brighter than OE not that they were lacking in the first place.

Monday morning, 5:15am. Drop the window down to wipe the condensation off so I can see to reverse down the drive, bang, crunch scrape.

Window clip has snapped and the passenger door glass is now sitting at a jaunty angle. Great start.
Image

Driving along, about 15 miles in and I'm gradually having to apply left hand lock to keep the car straight, at first assume a bush has worked loose and it's messing with the geometry. Push on and it's getting worse and worse, hit a cats eye and it feels worryingly solid. That'll be a flat tyre then

Weigh up whether I stop and change it in the dark or push on and deal with it later. As it happened it stood up to it pretty well and was able to keep between 30 and 40, just being very cautious when turning left.

Get to work and it's flat as a pancake.

Image

I've only ever had two proper punctures in the 20odd years and hundreds of thousands of miles I've driven, both have been on the same piece of road, and both on this same set of wheels. Two different cars, two different size and brands of tyre. Most odd.

Anyway, impact gun in the boot, space saver underneath, spare boshed on in about two minutes during my lunch break
Image

I think it's getting its own back because i was too lazy to drop the spare and give it a wash when doing all the other work under it.

Wheels now swapped back to the sunflowers.

How does it drive?

Superbly. I'm over the moon with it, it all just feels so much more direct now the torque isn't wasted twisting the beam around its bushes, and throwing it around it feels so much more gentle and progressive. Much more like the e30, letting you know exactly how much grip it has making catching it very easy and natural. The rear wheels now being closer to straight instead of toe in seems to have shifted the pivot point back in the car.

Can't say I've noticed any increase in noise or harshness, but might just be because the exhaust now drowns it out

I can now meet my clients for haircuts far quicker than before 8-)

The caliper had a crack by the seal, but ECP still took them back.

It has new ARB bushes, new top mounts and bearings, Koni sport adjustable struts and H+R 25mm lowering springs front and back. New upper and lower rear spring cups and Koni sport adjustable dampers on the back.

It’s raised the car quite a bit as the previous top mounts were kaput an the springs were probably quite saggy. Both rear springs had a broken top coil and the rear dampers were not doing much damping. It had Quattro Sport springs before but I’m pretty sure they were standard dampers.

It’s very steady under brakes, very little dive compared to before and settles really quickly on a bumpy road, some pretty tight damping and it handles very neutrally. Not much understeer and I can press on without feeling like I’ll run out of travel. It no longer tucks in when lifting off, probably as the front springs are working now but it does tighten its line a bit. The suspension is also very quiet, I hadn’t realised how noisy it had become.

Haldex is still a pretty rubbish feeling 4wd system but it can be driven around.

Worth the effort so it’s a nice upgrade.

I fucked the glovebox on the F150 by opening it too hard and stripped all the little teeth off the flimsy plastic dampener so ordered a new part to replace it. Look at how flimsy and shit it is plus cost me £45 till it eventually crossed the pond. I thought it would be a £5 part.
Image
Still this one is a ‘B’ spec so I assume it’s tougher. Only problem is I can’t get the old one out. It’s clearly a push fit but it’s pushed into another flimsy piece of plastic in the dash and I’m worried I’ll break that if I pull any harder and can’t get it to rotate or move at all. Any ideas? You can see how it mounts on the new part :?
