I've only just about that many miles in a year!McSwede wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:20 am In the month of October the M140i running costs have been as follows....
It's guzzled 534.33l of super unleaded (117.536 gal)
At a cost of £716.76 (ave £1.34 per/l)
Covering 3436 miles averaging 29.23mpg
It's been a riot and I'm loving it. Thankfully i do a reasonable amount of motorway miles which helps the MPG otherwise it'd be dreadful![]()

Is that a typical mileage for you? If so, I hate to say it, but wouldn’t a diesel have made more sense?McSwede wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:20 am In the month of October the M140i running costs have been as follows....

A diesel never makes more sense. Unless you have a tractor, or are a lorry driver.IanF wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 3:51 pmIs that a typical mileage for you? After seeing your previous post I was going to do a smart-arse reply along the lines of "did he notice that the engine's fcuked?", then didn't bother.ste wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 4:32 pm Still hasn't paid me all the money. Mainly because I can't start the fucking thing.![]()
It has always, ALWAYS started first time. Except on Monday when he was stood on my drive expecting to collect it. I'd collected him from the train station so had to drive him home in the end. He still wants it and as he said "It's so simple, there really can't be anything complicated wrong with it". However, it's now Friday and I still can't get it to start.![]()
Mileage is a little more than expected so far but I've had a lot of meetings all over the country. Funnily enough no, a diesel wasn't the most prudent choice. This is costing me the same or maybe slightly less to run than my C220d. The reason for this is that I pay for my own fuel and claim it back at the government recommended rate. For the Merc I was getting 13p per mile for business miles whereas in the M140i i can claim 22p per mile. The rate on the BMW thus far has meant that it has also covered all my private mileage where as in the Merc there would always be a shortfall. This shortfall is pretty much the same as the extra BIK that the M140i costs me making it cost neutral.IanF wrote: Fri Nov 02, 2018 3:51 pmIs that a typical mileage for you? The other factor was that our parent company has a woefully dull car list where I could have the choice of a diesel Passat SE or A3. That list will undoubtedly be forced upon us at some point in the future, but currently I can order whatever I want within the company budget so long as it isn't a coupe or convertible so I got something interesting. I really did assume previously that this kind of thing would be hideously expensive in BIK and fuel costs but when I did a little research i found it to be quite different.
The key factor in this was the engine size/fuel rate combo meaning the M140i running on SUL only at the average rate above I only need to maintain 28mpg to break even. If I'd gone for a Golf R or Audi S3 as a 2l I'd have only been able to claim back 15p per mile meaning I'd need to average 41mpg to break even and I didn't think that was achievable. Another plus point was that the straight 6 sounds chuffing great, has considerably more power, 25%-30% more torque and was RWD.![]()
