Bye Bye Burnham
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
H&F Council is kinda well known for having the lowest rates in London and maybe in the country because it's the most efficient council and it's open to granting planning permission. So it's sort of the ideal council from a management perspective but it's being punished for it. And this is a council with much higher rates than average of social housing. However as usual people are getting mad about the rich area paying less tax rather than getting mad about their own council wasting more which I guess is what the government wants.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
Famously Wandsworth and Westminster were always lowest: https://propertydata.co.uk/council-taxMito Man wrote: Fri Oct 23, 2026 11:35 am H&F Council is kinda well known for having the lowest rates in London
Hammersmith and Fulham is in the 'low' category but is 50% higher, so definitely not well known for being the lowest. Wandsworth are very well known for striving to be the lowest.

I remember when i lived in Windsor the council tax was far less than when i was in Camberley. I always presumed this was down to all the other revenue streams available to the council in a more affluent and popular tourist location - parking charges, business rates, licensing, more attractive land for development, etc…
i presume all these would apply to west London?

Each London borough is different - have a look at the link I posted. Richmond for instance is quite high.Rich B wrote: Fri Oct 23, 2026 12:33 pm I remember when i lived in Windsor the council tax was far less than when i was in Camberley. Re: Bye Bye Burnham
A quick search on one of the income streams between H&F (one of the lowest council tax areas) and east sussex (one of the highest).
H&F revenue £223 million - £58.9 million from PCNs
ES revenue £693.2 million - £1.7 million from PCNs
So 25% of H&F revenue comes from parking/fines whereas 0.0025% of ES revenue comes from the same stream.
H&F aren’t some super savvy money saving expert, they’ve just inherited a more fertile plot of land to farm.

“ The government said getting rid of the tariffs could save households up to £21 per year”
I’m sure I’ll notice £1.75 a month cheaper shopping. Cheers for that

The annual £20 saving will come in helpful to pay for the council tax increase.

And electric & water price hikes coming up next year too.Mito Man wrote: Tue Oct 27, 2026 9:47 am The annual £20 saving will come in helpful to pay for the council tax increase.

I mean, they're getting positive (if tiny) things in the press, so that's a start over Starmer. Although I'm not sure if have bothered with that one...
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
The Rest is Politics and Political Currency podcasts are great for discussions about current political issues… I thought Andy Burnham came across well, although his non-political style gave away that the North Sea oil was getting approved before it was confirmed.
I think a large gesture on what is consistently polled as the unfairest tax, ie inheritance tax, would grab the headlines and give them time to actually formulate a growth plan without the daily questioning and do so without a significant reduction in tax revenue… their current proposals to remove cliff edge policies suggests this could happen.
With the cost of living increases and the current unrest in Europe, I think it’s right that closer European collaboration does not go as far as rejoining the EU, but discussions next month should certainly look at a tie up, or customs union, to reduce the threat that Made in Europe etc would cause…
I think Burnham is following a pragmatic path and so is not frozen in place with constant u-turns à la Starmer..

The only path Burnham is treading is the path of least controversy up until a GE is called.
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
So, the budget hit, and errr.... Do you save money and earn interest on it? Pay even more tax. (49% on interest for the highest earners). Get £100 off energy bill help if you live in a tiny house. I can't see anything else that'll meaningfully impact the normal person.

4p off a jar of pickles is not to be sniffed at. I found the whole thing rather amusing - apparently the banks are the bad guys again so they’re gonna pay for the £100. The other bad guys - the cretinous rich landlords have got another 2% tax increase. For a man who left his prior position over defence spending to then do nothing about it once he was in control of the budget was rather something. Just goes to show there’s no friends in politics. Only cunts.

Can we all just agree that after 14 years of Labour saying the’d do a far better job at running the country than the Tories, we gave them a go, they’ve proved to be just as shit so can we go back to the Conservatives who always seems far more supportive of me and my family.

Amazes me that you can sit on live TV in front of millions and state they will see a real difference in this budget. No.
Biggest turd to come is salary sacrifice NI cap. Will still be in power unfortunately when that comes about.

Yeah, we must be the sickest and most mentally unstable country in the world to need so many benefits and help.dinny_g wrote: Wed Oct 28, 2026 6:49 pm Can we all just agree that after 14 years of Labour saying the’d do a far better job at running the country than the Tories, we gave them a go, they’ve proved to be just as shit so can we go back to the Conservatives who always seems far more supportive of me and my family.

Whacking up tax rates on savers, taxing employers to employ and kids to be schooled - all to benefit a voting clientele of the economically inactive. Well done Labour - I never had any illusions about who you were but maybe others will have the veil of ignorance lifted.

Re: Bye Bye Burnham
It's messing it up for people renting too as so many landlords are leaving as you get a much better return elsewhere.

Re: Bye Bye Burnham
I personally would feel better if people just renamed them - the Conservatives are the Tories, Labour should be the Doleys. We should just make it a thing. Anyway, back to work (because that's what I still am doing at 10pm every night... I hope the net recipients of my labours appreciate it!)
