Tell that to the oil industry in Aberdeen, it isn't struggling through a natural change it's dying from ideological politics.

So you think unless it brings the price down it's pointless producing or doing anything in the UK ?

It's an expensive country to do anything in and probably half of Europe and all of Asia could do it far cheaper. That's not always the driving force behind helping industry though. Once the skills leave the money leaves, we should be promoting industry and not harming it.

If the numbers for the average low income tax payer are right at £2640 a year, an average oil industry worker pays 6 times that and will have no benefits owed to them. That's a good deal imo for the government purse.

That's before you look at all the micro industries that feed the oil and gas industry.

(Whatever the viewpoint, it's an interesting discussion)

If you're just talking about job creation and tax revenue it doesn't have to be oil.

We could be funding retraining and encouraging people to start and sustainably grow businesses.

It's easier to just let big capital eat us alive though.

Wrt Aberdeen, it's struggling because all the people who paid the wages fucked off. That's where the wealth is consolidating.

Big capital has given enormous amounts of people a very good living.

It still can as other countries are proving daily.

As someone looking for their fourth new job this year,I can't really agree on that.

Maybe 40 years ago but not now.

I can understand your feelings on the subject more now and hope your luck changes but what's happened to you happened to loads of people in the oil and gas industry. It shouldn't be getting damaged on purpose, all business should have a natural decline when they are no longer needed, not pushed out.

Whatever happens I hope the job market treats you well!!

There are indications (https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2 ... us/5300213 the "Super Intelligence" is just another grift. Because why not...

It's just more insider trading, isn't it ? There was presumably nothing very special about .si domains before his announcement.

"Selective Intelligence" more like.

It'll always be Système International for me.

It's been confirmed multiple times that anything dug out of the north sea will be sold on the open market, therefore it won't change how we source and pay for fuel in any way.
An oil company will make some money. But it won’t affect the global oil price and therefore it’s not going to achieve the intended effect, so it’s just enriching a private organisation.

Zed is correct.
And the thousands of well paid people it can employ in the UK........

I left the UK side to and massive amounts of tax because unions and stupid government decisions were destroying the market in the UK. I'd much rather not pay 48% tax on my earnings but that's what they did to the industry.

Dave!
If you’re working for a U.K. oil company in the U.K. (which the oil field must be in to fulfil this request) then you’d be paying U.K. taxes to work there. So you’re not incentivised to come back and work on a rig here anyway.

Are we in the area of James Dyson et al - multi-millionaires who have left the U.K. for tax reasons complaining about how the U.K. is run? Pay your share of taxes and you get a say.

No we work on all rigs over the world, uk people could do it but the work for them has dwindled so much we are taking up the slack. When we get paid no money comes back to the uk from the contractor.

The UK work is drying up massively so there is less point in having a UK arm of the business. Whatever way you look at it that is less UK tax money coming in.

If we decided that Lawyers earn too much and we should tax them a higher percentage, would you not be annoyed that you were paying a much higher percentage than other people for zero gain ?

What if you ran a firm with 100 employees and decided to start up again in Norway and pay less. Who benefits apart from you as the government doesn't.

Personally, if you employ people and bring in a lot of business, I think your level of tax should go down the more work and jobs you bring in. Incentivise building a business in the UK and use the people we have over here.

That's suggesting that the people who earn the most pat proportionally less tax than everyone else, which seems like a backwards way to work tbh.

If you are incentivised to open a business in the UK why shouldn't you get personal tax breaks ?

If it means I'm providing hundreds of jobs paying millions in tax through the business and employees then it's a net gain for the country.

I don't know where the threshold would be for that but even offsetting some of your tax against your employees for a small business would be excellent, takes someone off welfare, gets more people in work and benefits the employer.

I don't know man, I'd rather a simple system where everyone pays than constantly shifting the goal posts to let the already wealthy off the hook.

I'll grant you the government can't even deal with obvious money laundering so this may be a step too far for their abilities 😂

What I'd like to see is a resetting of Corp Tax rates. The Cons introducing a disproportionately large hike on SME's was one of the stupidest moves any recent Government has made. I'm not necessarily against tapered rates, but topping it out at £250k was daft.

I wouldn't be opposed to having the higher rate corp tax come in at a higher level tbh.

Import news. It’s now all about the nuclear drugs in Iran.
They were nuclear and drug. They were doing drugs but they were doing the nuclear. But these drug factories slash nuclear factories were hit so hard.

I assume they'll start bombing hospitals soon then. There's both drugs and nuclear materials in them.
