Yes. Sell the M5 once it is fixed and get that one. Very nice colour.

Yep, just rod bearings, worn enough to knock so where did all the metal go and the likelihood of the crank not needing a little tickle are going to be low.

One of the guys on the VXR8 forum was with a group up in the Highlands around 2015. A young lad was there in his dad's borrowed (and new) M6GC.

The boy in the VXR8 completed an overtake, and the GC followed them through. Long, wide, straight piece of tarmac and the VXR8 pulled back in as he reached the limiter in 3rd (100 clicks), and was another 20 clicks through 4th as the GC came past doing what must have been 15-20 clicks more.

Apparently it was pretty impressive. :geek:

Which one are you using? Motorwatch says it hasn't had it's price changed since it was listed on 11th Sept, so I assume whatever you're using is doing something clever?

Listed at £8595 then almost immediately - same day - changed to £9995. Impossible to know why, of course.

Curious thing - on the phone app it shows a Q&A section where he's listed the fault codes. But on the web page it's not there.

Of the codes, the first two are a lambda sensor - my favourite !

Then ABS, and throttle position sensor. Those two sound related to each other.

And one about comms between the two engine ECUs. Could simply be due to the above.

So although the "it could be something really simple" claim is a well worn trope it might actually be true. It's just that tracking down the simple fault is not simple.

Also - no. My Q7 put me right off Audis and I've no intention of ever buying one, especially when there's so many broken BMWs I want more 🤣

It has some weird appeal as a former owner of both an Estelle and a Skoda rally car, but not in the same vehicle.

Well, it depends on who did the diagnosis. Was it a specialist ? We have had two examples recently of specialists not being able to correctly diagnose, quoting for the wrong thing and happily taking money to not fix it - my neighbour's 1-Series, and DJ's BiL's Passat. Maybe they had a scary quote and are cutting their losses. Has the owner self-diagnosed with "help" from the internet ? There could be all manner of wrongness based on the kind of guff I've seen posted over the years plus the internet paranoia of "OMG u can't drive it no more ur will die". Forums are weird.

These engines are prone to worn big end bearings so it's not a surprising fault. And unless it's spun one or more of them - which you would definitely know about - I don't think I've seen one needing work on the crank. It could have bent a rod if it's been modded. That turns into a big job. Or it could be something else. Without having a good look (and listen) in person none of us know anything. And you still won't totally know the answer until you start taking it apart.

FWIW the M6 GC was £24k more than an M5 when new  so this for £10k plus a few grand of parts could be a bargain. I'm nearly £15k into my M5 so far and it's still only an M5.

M5s are for moderately successful dentists.

M6 GCs are for those who have made it 8-)

The Passat saga continues with some twists and turns. It will be transported to the gearbox repair place.

Don't know anything definite yet, but it sounds like the first place loaded up the big parts cannon before doing proper fault finding.
