Car Insurance, moving from Admiral to The AA

It's that time again, and Admiral is quoting me £650 (basically the same as last year)

Compare the Market is showing the AA as £360 though!

I've checked cover, legal, courtesy car, excess etc and the AA is a match or better for my current policy with Admiral

Am I missing something?!

How come the AA virtually half the price?!

I think the insurers normal practice of ramping up prices for renewal has just increased massively. Admiral were the same with my mum, insane renewal price, phone to cancel and they can suddenly halve it and include home and contents insurance!

You can do this online via the website with Admiral. Tell them you've got a cheaper quote and they'll usually match. I think you go to cancel renewal, then say I've got a cheaper quote. Just enter all the details. My renewal was £380, which was competitive, but had a cheaper £350 quote online. Went through their systems, immediately dropped it to £340 without hassle, so just clicked renew.

I had to do a lot of haggling with Admiral when renewing last year. They’re definitely more like old-school renewals.

As for The AA being cheaper: buying market share or have you just ticked over into an age bracket which they are targeting? Tried Saga…?

I've not tried Saga yet, good call, they didn't figure in the results from CTM so maybe they just don't play that game

I wondered about contacting Admiral (although the automated website "Is your quote too expensive" thing says that calling won't help as a person has no more discretion)

And the difference in prices is so vast I can't see them getting anywhere near close to that AA price

Same as mik - Saga were almost double my Admiral renewal quote this year.

I halved mine from going from NFU to LV.

I think some insurers spluge more on the customer services to corner that side. Eg I remember when I last had an accident my insurer picked up in minutes and had me in a taxi while my car was being picked up while the other bloke (with Admiral) was still on hold when I left the scene...

You can do the "I'm thinking of leaving" on the site and punch in the details of your new quote, it'll tell you if there is a better price or not before you proceed with anything, so you might as well see what magic they can pull from their hat...
