Changes at The Intercooler

Post by Jobbo »

I put on this week’s The Intercooler podcast on my way home. After nearly 10 minutes of advert Andrew Frankel mentioned that Dan Prosser had left. That’s quite big news when Dan was the co-founder with Frankel and I believe had the original idea, asking Frankel to join him.

I’ve been a subscriber for a couple of years. I suspect I am going to unsubscribe now though; I liked Dan’s articles and his take on cars. I always liked Frankel’s writing in Autocar but I’m not sure I’m such a fan on TI and I’m not sold on Gez Medinger who I think is effectively stepping into Dan’s shoes - Gez is a decent chap but his expertise isn’t in motoring writing but video production - that’s definitely a less important part of TI to me.

A shame. But since I’d forgotten I pay for a subscription it’s given me a reason to reconsider it.

Listened to that bit of the episode this morning and it seems very strange the way Andrew mentioned it so fleetingly. Made me think things might be getting legal and did some digging to see if Dan said anything. Actually it makes much more sense in the context of Dan's announcement a couple of months ago, which I'd missed at the time, but would have been nice if he'd been able to say goodbye properly on the podcast. Dan and Andrew worked very well together on the podcast I thought.

I found that after I'd posted - though the way Andrew mentioned it on the podcast and the way Dan announced it 2 months ago without then making more posts or saying what he's doing makes me think things soured a bit between them. Someone on PH said their accounts didn't look great, but I don't know what to read into that. Dan's video above referred to a third person, Richard, who was the investor and I would speculate that Dan isn't getting as much money as he would have liked from his baby. Why else would you leave the thing you created? A shame, I really rate Dan's work.

I like Dan, but I've never really enjoyed watching/listening to MrF, hence I've never really bothered with The Intercooler.

Mr Frankel has a brother called Richard, so I think it's possible he's the investor. (edit: same gentleman mentioned in this article )

I did cancel my subscription which runs until January, so I could always renew if I get value out of it.

Immediately after cancelling I got an e-mail offering a 20% discount on the sub cost. But that's 20% off the price I paid last year, not 20% off their new reduced cost, so the discounted offer is actually more than a standard sub cost. Well done chaps
