How will this affect cars that are properly maintained with working emissions equipment though ?

I hate all the extra control but I'm on the fence but may be mid-interpreting it.

Proceeds to spend millions on a proposal that will just shaft vehicle drivers everywhere, on something that already gets checked on mots

They suggest bringing this in with a 6 month grace period- Renault couldn’t even get jobbo an air conditioning compressor, how can we expect them to get 50,000 dpf’s, cats, adblue pumps, etc

While I think it’s crazy to expect a ten year old car with maybe 150,000 miles on it to meet exactly the same emission standards as it did when brand new, I also think lots of people are taking the piss.

Buying cars which in theory have low emissions and sit in a low tax band, to then gut the dpf and code out the able system.

Maybe I didn’t read far enough, but I’m not sure what they’re actually proposing or how they would enforce it?

Mot tests already check emissions meet the appropriate standards for the age of the vehicle. Afaik if they suspect a car has been modified to not meet the standards they can make you go get a fresh mot.

For more than one question I highlighted that the existing MOT test verifies that emissions meet regulations.

I'm surprised at their "fewer than 1 in 10 cars meets the official limits for nitrogen oxide"..... that looks suspiciously like a different-testing-methods-yield-different results issue to me?

It’s cracking down on people selling dpf deletes, de-cats, egr deletes, obnoxious remaps. Probably not such a bad idea.

I don't think there is a reason for not having a cat on the road with modern engine management.
Is it a packaging cost issue? No idea on the cost of a high flow cat that actually works properly.

I mean, do any """sports cats""" work properly? The only time I hear about them is when people have to drive into the MOT bay with the exhaust cherry red to get a pass. That surface area matters and the 200 cell ones just don't have it.

I'm generally not averse to this (although I'll read up about it more at the weekend and respond to it - I've only surface read it) but it does annoy me that my plans to drop the secondary cats (not monitored and it'll pass an MOT as it stands without them) and replace with a (front) catback might be out the window, but also glad I've not done it yet as a result...

Can you start it from cold, pootle to the MOT centre and pass emissions, or do you have to deliver it to them ticking hot after a 10 mile rev limiter test?

I have never in my life started any car from cold and pootled to the MOT centre.

I do it all the time cos the MOT place is only a mile down the road

I'm thinking back to the M135i/140i group, where people would get their STAGE 2 REMAP WITH SPORTS CAT AND CARBON INTAKE AND NEW VAPE PEN and then would be shocked that no matter how hard they tried, they'd never pass emissions. It happened so often that when people were asking how much their old cat was worth, half a dozen people would immediately respond telling them not to sell it, with their horror stories of doing the above. Remember, it's an M135/140i group and they're now in the hands of chancers

OK, perhaps not stone cold, but with a *decent* sports cat, do you need to give the car a workout and get them to do emissions as soon as you arrive? Or will it just pass with just being warmed through normally?

Renaultsport twingo’s have the worlds smallest standard cats, and can struggle to pass cold with zero mods. Mine used to get dropped off for mot on the morning and get done sometime in the afternoon and managed to pass but I know loads that need warming through to pass



That’s the standard exhaust manifold with cat, it sits behind the engine and the bays that cramped it’s pretty much an engine out job to remove, it’s popular mod to fit a decat 4 to 1 manifold and a cat back exhaust

We had a sports cat on the Xsara VTS years ago. Never had any issues passing a test.
