We got pretty lucky to be honest - there wasn't any serious damage to the floorboards and they dried pretty quickly. the Airing cupboard was a disaster zone when the tank and handwear was removed to I painted it, put laminate flooring down and converted it into a storage place for vacuums, brushes etc.

The Damp Mark on the ceiling in the living room was covered by special paint.

That's good. If the boiler is being ripped out we might decorate the cupboard, if it stays, then I'm not bothering.

I remember when I brought the painter round for the quote, I was dreading it but he just went "Yeah, no worries, we'll cover that and it wont come back through - no problem"

My water softener shat itself, it was stuck on the rinse mode whilst I was away. No water damage but it used 10 litres of water per minute for maybe 4 days. What you want during a hosepipe ban Don’t know what my plumber is ordering but he said Harvey’s and BWT are shit.

The manifold had split, causing the leak. And because it is a brilliant design the leak was spraying water directly onto the control board. That, as you'd expect, didn't like it and shorted out. Plumber has gone to get new one, but it is a one hour round-trip away.

All is well again. We have hot water and a non-leaking boiler. Looks like we've got away relatively easily. Walls are not wet or damaged, just the lining paper. Floorboards are drying out with the aid of a dehumidifier, and seem no worse than what they were. The lino will need to be replaced, but that's quite easy.

As far as I can see the only issue is that there was a piece of ply in one corner where they've brought the electrics up. That is completely destroyed, but I assume I should be able to put a board down instead. I've got some bits of decking wood, so I'll see if I can make it work.

Yesterday we had another torrential downpour and for the second time since I've lived here, the highway storm water gulley became overwhelmed and sent water gushing into my garden. Not a puddle - a substantial amount.

The water drained itself naturally within an hour or so once the rain had stopped.

I'm so frustrated about this because we planned to put the house on the market next year and move to Yorkshire. Now I'm going to have to declare the flooding element and that's going to throw a massive spanner in the works.

Apparently this happened once or twice before with the previous owner, not that I was told, of course.

Councils are utterly shit at looking after their drainage now.

We have so much more flooding in Peterborough than ever before and the clever council mention climate change. So when people send hundreds of blocked drain pictures they repeat the hot weather argument. Yes the extra runoff is an issue but blocked drains will never help any situation.

Same in Stockton. When I was a kid they came every week or two to clean all the storm drains, now it’s once a year if you’re lucky

Yeah, the council never maintain the lines around here and only come if there's been a problem, and even then it's like getting blood out of a stone.

On that note, when I first raised this with the council back in 2024, I told them that the water had entered the property gardens and house. I laid it on thick intentionally but I should have just said that it had come into the gardens.

This is on-record now and I'm going to have to figure out how to manage this when I sell.

Fuck knows what I say on the form that asks about flooding. The house itself can handle the downpours fine, but not the excess water from the road outside.
