My name is Chris and I have a problem. Quite a fun one, but it's getting a bit obsessive. Are we all like this, still, despite getting a bit older?

I am officially 'just saving' for a second car. But this has increased my searching the classifieds to a crazy extent. Still no idea what it is I actually want, my requirements seem to change like the weather.

Anyway. Here's a selection of what I've really liked in the last week to redefine the term eclectic:

Not keen on the larger wheels on this, but fear not, he has the original Speedlines. Was for sale in January. Why has it not sold the first time? Why is this important if I'm 'just saving '. I do not know. But I still watched the Jason Camissa video and imagined the bwarpy noises in the canyons.

I'm a massive fan of the Corrado, I think they look brilliant. It'd have to the VR6, though. Good ones seem to be expensive, so not sure what £8k actually gets you?

I keep looking at this as a fun track car with BBR220 upgrade and different to anything else we have summer convertible, even though it is too good to be a track car, and I am not a fan of convertibles, and I wouldn’t want to tie up that money in either of the above desires and and and and.

Modded MX5s makes a tonne of sense as a jack of all trades. If I remember rightly though, John of this parish had one and now owns a Caterham I'm not too sure I'd want to tour /go camping in a 7 like I used to though, bit old for that.

Correct, NC3.5 with a BBR supercharger conversion with 250 ish BHP so plenty of go. The ND is a step up in quality but is closer to the mk1 in size internally and I’ve read taller drivers can struggle to get comfortable. A standard NC is a decent car though and pretty cheap to upgrade the basics, just check for rust!

I’d love a corrado, would be happy with a 16v to be honest, none of them are fast and I’m not worried about that these days anyway.

I’ve always liked them, but think they aged quite quickly initially when everything else was a round blob, but now they look surprisingly crisp and modern.

The soft top 30AE was £28k in 2019 and the RF version was £30k. I paid about £32k for my MX5 new in 2024 after discount; it has a similar spec to the 30AE. I don’t think the 30AE represents great value compared to any other MX5 and the colour is a bit marmite - it might be rare but it’s not a particularly nice orange IMO.

Anyway, if you’re going to get an MX5 and might mod it with a bit of track use any 184bhp (approx 2019 onwards) 2.0 version is a sensible starting point. Used values seem to have hardened a bit since I test drove a 2019 one in Sept 2023 up for £13,500 with about 40k miles.

Evo don't seem to like the revised V6 engine/transmission that comes with the facelift.

It's not a V6, it's the Ingenium straight-6. The pre-facelift supercharged V6 is pretty rare I think. But it's not an Ingenium so probably a bit more trustworthy; it's based on the V8. Thats a lot of car for the money, even though they seem slightly more pricey than when I last looked 12 months ago. Although, if you are financing you could probably find a new car for a similar monthly pcp.
