PBS spacetime YouTube did a good bit on the "Great Filter" not that long ago. Not many are as grim as the Dark Forest hypothesis though.

I wouldn't be surprised if you dug deep enough into Mars you'd find life, it'll find a way as they say.

But as for the search for intelligence, not sure where you'd even start.

I read Where Is Everybody by Stephen Webb quite a few years ago - since I can't find the order in my Gmails, probably 20+ years ago. I don't think there are any more recent analyses which add anything to it, though I see there's a new edition. Probably just correcting a typo.
