Last time I looked up Miliband he was well respected in the civil service and in industry for actually understanding the briefs he gets, in detail - IE when working on Net Zero stuff, he took the time to do the research and not just make comforting mouth noises on camera.

But some hack took a dozen pictures per second of him eating a bacon sandwich, and picked one of the 75% of them that everyone would have, where it looks like you're actually eating a live mains cable, and he's forever branded a weirdo because apparently shitrag paparazzi are more authoritative source on his competence than his actual record in the House.

This is why we can't have nice things.

The man has very quickly ruined our national grid and workable farmland, he is a thick twat and had no place doing his job. When Octopus energy are having to get the crayons out explain to him the renewables rollout will increase bills and instability, yet he just replies with....

Tbf to Vince (who otherwise I utterly cannot stand for many reasons, incl professional) his position makes sense - a cliff face policy position harms those who can least afford the consequences, and self-harms from an energy security perspective. His big target has been the push of ASHPs.

There's a very knowledgable chap on PH who's been pointing out that we likely won't be drilling anything anyway, as there's nothing there worth having that's cost-effective enough to reach. But allowing the companies to make the decision, rather than stating it as a policy decision, is just a bit of positive PR.

Not really, Trump is just jumping on any opportunity make himself relevant. Burnham is just doing what we’ve always done. It was only the last 2 years that Miliband put a stop to it for his stupid ideology.

Trump has been banging on about it recently while when taking about Starmer, so the early announcement on it by Burnham certainly points towards some kind of Trump appeasement.

Let's face it, Trump does not care about this from the perspective of the prosperity of the UK, he obviously has some investments or cronies or both which are going to benefit.

When I first became aware of Burnham at some point during his original tenure as an MP I thought he had potential, but even though I haven't really been following it very closely, something makes me uneasy about him as PM. Maybe just the manner of it all, I dunno.

If my unease turns out to be prescient at least he's got less than a full term and therefore a limit to the amount of damage done (in theory).

There was 15 years of drill rig work in the North Sea when I was last on a rig 4 years ago. It'll still be there now.

Compared to this other pretend environmental land grabbing crap, an old lister in your shed will be a better option.

The way we are doing renewables is completely wrong and a waste of money to help the rich.

Yep, our entire energy system is rigged to make the already very rich, richer.

I mean, basically Labour made a big deal of going through with their manifesto pledge to cut electric bills, which knocked off a few pence per KwH for me, but then a few months later Ofgem or whoever allowed the price cap to rise and now I'll be paying more than I was in the first place. Happy to pay more for my bills so that the majority shareholders and board members of the energy companies can keep flying around in their private jets though

Ah see that’s not true though, between ww2 and the end of the 70s, we’d made a lot of progress in closing the gap between richest and poorest.

Thatcher and Reagan coming into power was the start of reversing that.

That was the point in time at which the gap between richest and poorest was the smallest. And I infer you think that is a good thing since you bothered to mention it and criticised the policies introduced by Reagan and Thatcher. Therefore you think the pre-Thatcher 1970s was the best time. If you didn’t mean that, correct your own post.

I’ve seen talk of Burnham introducing a wealth tax - on families with assets of £100m, so unlikely to trouble anyone here (unless Broccers’ crypto is doing better than he lets on).

But it’s in principle a bad thing. It won’t bring in nearly as much as anticipated and even people unaffected directly by it will consider it unfair so it’s politically sensitive.
Getting the richest to pay tax at the same rate as the squeezed middle classes should be the aim.
