Despite not being a Labour voter I always wanted to give them a fair crack because 18 months ago it felt good that at least there were adults in number 10. I'm on record on this very forum saying that I think Keir is a decent, principled guy, but I think that unfortunately he's largely surrounded himself with idiots and unqualified hangers on, and Reeves is definitely in that camp. She had the opportunity this time last year, and at the start of their term, to start the process to radically reform and simplify the tax code here in the UK, remove cliff-edges, spread the burden a little better and, most importantly, set the groundwork for proper actual growth. To say she's fumbled it is a massive understatement.

Part of me thinks that we could and should see a new chancellor before the spring statement and part of me is worried that actually we'll get an even worse tax-and-spend ideologue that will spook the bond markets, push us into a debt spiral and ultimately cost us all dearly. And Reeves, Starmer and the back-benchers will all be to blame if that happens.

Was reading somewhere the Bank of England is expecting inflation to drop to its 2% target soon, hopefully food stops rising because this makes for eye watering numbers

How is inflation going to be 2% if those price rises are real? Are Asda cunningly only putting up prices on items which aren't in the standardised basket for calculating inflation?

I think meat has been a real struggle recently, prices are up across the board. But prices in other areas are going down, e.g. milk prices have dropped (in fact there's an oversupply that's so big some producers are literally pouring it down the drain) which means cheese etc is probably dropping too. Olive oil has seen massive wholesale drops that are probably transferring to retail too, and that's just off the top of my head. And a lot of other produce is stable in price, which will cancel out any big increases in one category such as meat.

It's quite hard to get decent quality milk that isn't being particularly evil to dairy farms. We get ours relatively local but it's not the easiest to track. When the fuckwits bringing in a packaging tax which means easily recyclable glass is hammered it'll be even worse. I've ignored it as I was getting too annoyed

After looking more into Halal and how it's done over here I'm hoping the drive to put proper labelling will make meat producers see sense. Still using our local farm and butchers but it's not suitable for a lot of people.

Yeah I saw noise around raising our legendarily high PA and to pay for it with a 50% tax rate. So the lower paid can pay even less tax and the better paid can enjoy marginal rates of higher than 50% (including NI etc).

It's been a bit of a shitshow for her, as she was well liked up here when she was 'just' an MP AFAIK.

I expect being chancellor has probably fucked her as a 'local' MP, which it would seem she's going back to as she's not accepted a cabinet position that was offered.
