The House Projects Thread
Re: The House Projects Thread
I put acoustic batten panelling on the roof. It was £20 per 2.4m x 0.6m - not too bad as it’s very easy work and it’s a final solution with no additional finishing work. Even acts as insulation as it has a felt backing which also allows it to bend a tiny bit to take up any discrepancies. But it was in a detached garage so the fire resistant version not needed.
There is a fire rated version but it may be prohibitively expensive for a garage roof.

How about not having a sig at all?
Re: The House Projects Thread
Needs to be skimmed for regs so the gaps in the boards are filled in. To skim you need noggins at the ends of the boards otherwise they twist and deflect under pressure so skimming don’t workMatty wrote: Sun Jun 21, 2026 9:44 pm Just to tidy it, and painting it white will improve the brightness in there too, feels pretty dingy at the moment - I've got pipework and electrical cable running through the joists. I'll keep a car in, mostly during winter. No room above it.
Why does it need noggins? With joists that close would that not be enough?
And why would it then need to be plastered if keeping a car in? I was just planning to board it and paint...
Re: The House Projects Thread
Ok so I have completed the first "House Project" at the new place and it was a car related one to boot...
Garage had shelving and cupboards installed by the previous owner to store gardening related stuff but unfortunately it didn't look like there was any easy way to get the car in whilst that was in situ. I managed to remove said cabinets and shelves within about an hour on Sunday morning given how shonkily they were made. Sadly I forgot to take any pictures of the RR in full transit van mode.

Time to insert car! As you can see it fits comfortably width wise...

But is quite tight on length even though there is not much stuff remaining at the far end (and with the bikes in the garden). Time for some garden storage I think...

This should now give me the impetus to get the paint all fixed...

I was looking at that TV (need a bigger one for the new living room) - how much was the Costco price?
Re: The House Projects Thread
£1200, think Amazon matched it during Prime thingy, but Costco gives 5 year warranty included. Also, never had any questions with returns etc.
Also, 4th one I’ve bought; they’re very good tvs!

Re: The House Projects Thread
Need some advice as I’m lame at DIY. Doing some repairs to my crack as the underlying issue - the unsupported chimney stack
has been fixed.
I’ve got bonding coat and filler but what else is best to put in this hollow crack first, to fill it and give the plaster or filler something to stick to? It’s quite deep, it’s where a stud wall meets the external wall.

I think it’s an expanding foam job
Re: The House Projects Thread
I'd use grip fill, the pink stuff is what I used. It has made a really strong bond and was nice and easy to shape when I used it.
Whether that's the right thing to do, who knows but the parting wall in our bathroom is still solid 12 years later.
Dave!
Re: The House Projects Thread
Was gonna say grip fill would be my go to for that sort of job.
Good luck filling your crack.

For some reason I’ve never used gripfill, will give it a go
Re: The House Projects Thread
Thanks for pointing at the crack, I'd have struggled to see it otherwise...

Just setup the C5 for my folks - only the 48" one but I'm incredibly impressed with it for the cash. Just remember to turn off the energy saving feature!IanF wrote: Mon Jun 29, 2026 2:56 pm £1200, think Amazon matched it during Prime thingy, but Costco gives 5 year warranty included. And all other motion ‘enhancing’ crap that makes everything look like an episode of Neighbours, then you have a great TV!Matty wrote: Sun Jul 05, 2026 11:17 amJust setup the C5 for my folks - only the 48" one but I'm incredibly impressed with it for the cash.
