Bye Bye Burnham
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
"So my party have spent the last two years saying there's no money. I know, I'll piss loads of money away on what amounts to little more than a vanity project, that'll keep the far right out of power."
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
Wonder if he’ll last long enough to make use of his newly renovated office which won’t be ludicrously overpriced and delayed.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
Reading about this chap, seems like another waste of time. Joined the Labour Party at school and seems to have never had a job outside of political musical chairs. A professional career politican. Not exactly representative of the people or experienced in the real world. Another chancer in my opinion like Farage.
Also seems to want to put Ed Miliband in as chancellor, that level of judgement makes a worthy replacement to Starmer picking Mandelson after finding out his dirty secrets.
Better days are most definitely not coming

Re: Bye Bye Burnham
Hmmm.. so no actual policy (or questions allowed) and the first thing the country needs is another political vanity project (paid for by us obvs) to create No.10North (imagine that will make the BBC move look like a massive success story) that won’t improve anyone’s QoL and just confirms to me that he thinks Government determines where wealth is (sadly businesses disagree).
Also, no cabinet until he gets the top job (and then nobody can argue)… I feel we are getting done up like a fish dinner chaps. “Plus ça change,..”

Re: Bye Bye Burnham
You don't think the BBC North move is a success story? And I don't see how he can name a cabinet until he actually has the job, even if that does look like a fait accompli.
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
Well London will be a more pleasant place if all these arseholes move North.

Re: Bye Bye Burnham
Have you seen an improvement in the service the BBC delivers? Feels the same to me. NAO states it will have cost £942m by 2030 due the move, so no I don’t think it was worthwhile.Swervin_Mervin wrote: Mon Jun 29, 2026 3:13 pm You don't think the BBC North move is a success story? Rayner et al will be able to swap properties much easier now and obviously all southern politicians will be entitled to have a place oop North paid for by us (I don’t imagine any of the Northern politicians will give up their southern residences either.) It’s a divisive and wasteful decision imho

So do you think the benefits were always solely going to be to BBC output?IanF wrote: Mon Jun 29, 2026 4:13 pmHave you seen an improvement in the service the BBC delivers? Feels the same to me. It's had a huge positive impact in the NW, in particular on the associated technical and creative sectors. So much so that many other companies are choosing to locate or relocate their businesses here. So that cost to move will likely have been significantly outweighed by the growth in the region's economy, especially that of Manchester.
Does that mean I'd want a No.10 North? Not necessarily no. The two things are completely different things.
Re: Bye Bye Burnham
If he does this land tax idea then expect renters to be getting screwed. On the landlord pages I'm on loads are already selling up and if the possible 0.96% land tax comes in it'll be a hell of a lot more.
Also loads are moving to agents and the increased costs that involves. Which will all move to tenants.
The only good thing is that it hasn't been officially pushed forward by him, just something he has mentioned and people getting over-excited over it.
Dave!

Re: Bye Bye Burnham
I think it’s a good thing to be less London centric but I’m not sure Burnham has explained it very well. The working brawn of the government comes from its civil servants and they’re pretty well spread out across the country. Would splitting 10 Downing Street actually streamline things or just result in further inefficiency with ministers taking helicopter trips back and forth. With everything being online is this all even necessary. Or is this just symbolism for the sake of it.
I’d agree with the Welsh leader saying “there’s nothing of substance”
If he does the LVT thing and bins off stamp duty then I’ll be happy as I can try to find something freehold.

I'll have you know with our finely managed and not in any way consultant wasteful companies have provided HS2 on time to enable fast movement between north and south.
