Nope, not the way my son has used his phone, xBOX and iPAD. He maintains excellent connections with his aunts, uncles, and cousins in Ireland and further afield, has built up an near encyclopaedic knowledge of sports statistics, something he's very passionate about and has an enviable level of wisdom about identity and gender and religion and understanding and I'm pretty sure he didn't get most of that from either me and his mother, or from school.

Actually I did have these:

I don't think there was ever a movement to ban them. I do remember certain playground games like British Bulldog being banned. Which is the 1980s equivalent of this social media ban I guess.
Re: Bye bye Starmer
Gameboy Advance and Halo Combat Evolved on the school LAN, it can't be bettered. I remember the start of social media, Bebo etc but never caught on until Facebook. It was just silly status jokes but the groups function was useful for homework.
TBF the internet as a whole went to shit rather quickly after that. Heavily pushing advertisements, paying for everything and then reels and now it's the AI stuff. If you bin off reels/videos it'll probably be much nicer.

How about not having a sig at all?

You clearly have an excellent child who has been raised by excellent parents! What platforms is he on?dinny_g wrote: Wed Jun 17, 2026 3:44 pmNope, not the way my son has used his phone, xBOX and iPAD. I meant to ask earlier, I presume you don't think the banning of advertising of high sugar and fat foods to under 16''s goes far enough. I presume that while you may only give your boy the occasional bag of crisps or chocolate bar, because some parents allow their children to eat junk 7 days a week, we just go ahead and ban the sale of all chocolate and crisps for children under 16. Oh and McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Dominos et al
I mean best, it's not nutritious and at worst, it causes Childhood Obesity and diabetes
The government should make that decision for us, right ?

I’m curious to know how the people who are pro this see it being enforced.
Like, I get it’ll just be more ai age verification but if people circumvent those do you want to see punishments?

I don’t see a problem with banning the advertising of shitty food during kids tv - though tbh - who the hell watches tv with adverts these days anyway?dinny_g wrote: Wed Jun 17, 2026 4:12 pm WhatsApp, Instagram, SnapChat, YouTube, then XBox Live

But the platform isn’t included in the proposed legislation, it’s entirely aimed at users.

The proposed legislation isn’t out til the end of the year. I would presume it’s similar to the australian system that imposed monetary penalties on social media companies that fail to take reasonable steps to prevent under 16s accessing them.ZedLeg wrote: Wed Jun 17, 2026 4:29 pm But the platform isn’t included in the proposed legislation, it’s entirely aimed at users.
Re: Bye bye Starmer
You mean the one that has been so successful that 60% of Australian youths have seen no change in their SM use?
All it will take is age gating/ banning vpns as well.
I remember a decade ago when the great firewall of china was an authoritarian punch line, now the sensibles are cheering for our own for the children.

Re: Bye bye Starmer
so you just made up your statement about the proposed legislation?
Re: Bye bye Starmer
No, the government’s statement specifically said that they gave the platforms a chance to make the changes so they’re going round them.

Re: Bye bye Starmer
So you think the vehicle they’ll use to enforce this is to arrest children?
