But I was amazed at Audi's dire parts support for these older cars. Barely anything available for a car less than 20 years old!

Apparently this is a bit of an Audi thing and no models are immune, even the R8... Makes owning one of these extremely difficult. Why would you bother when parts supply is flaky and reliability so poor?

Parts were obsolete for my 97 Alfa 164 in 2003.

If you had an accident you would have to write off the car for a £20 trim as you couldn't get them!

I linked an RE Performance video a few weeks back where Ricky (the owner) said how dire Audi are with their legacy models. After 15 years they pretty much stop all production so getting parts is rediculous. He's claimed numerous times he's now actively refusing to work on older Audi RS models as they get stuck on his ramps for weeks/months waiting for bits.

R8's are still some of his B&B, but stuff like the older V8 R8's have to have thousands spent converting them to newer V10 parts because you can't get V8 stuff now....and they're not exactly ancient cars! They weren't cheap cars before, but its why they're seeing more bodged cars.

Yes, I’ve definitely heard that about R8 suspension arms before.

Vw are also pretty terrible at supporting older vehicles despite a huge amount of their advertising featuring their heritage.

Partly why I’ve kind of stuck with older BMWs, for the parts you can’t get aftermarket there’s a good chance the dealer can get in a couple of days, or even on their eBay shop.

Yeah I think that's the crux of it. There's some suspension parts you can't get in V8 spec, only V10, but it requires surrounding parts to be upgraded to V10 as well, and then that needs to be done at all 4 corners....so what should be a few hundred quid job ends up costing many thousands.

That's very much a laymans description but there's information about it online.

I'm also forgetting that the R8 is now a 20 year old car, which is crazy, as it still looks fantastic. Need to buy carefully though, there's some absolute dogs out there. I'm off to go look at the classifieds again.

Surprised there’s no aftermarket stuff for it? And why can’t the bushes and ball joints just be replaced?

I think China will save us soon, they’re starting to get really rather good at making desktop CNC machines that any idiot can use and they’re coming down in price very quickly. I reckon we’re under 10 years away from just scanning any object, using AI to touch it up, 3D printing a prototype to check dimensions and then CNC milling the full part, all for a few grand to get the whole setup. Basically what Jay Leno does now to keep his old stuff running but with $1 million Haas machines.

Aloominum arms don’t really like new joints being pushed in. It must be possible somehow, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to make them, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen replacement joints for alloy arms.

Cars are manufactured to last (ideally) 1 sec past warranty point, so I'm curious why you think car manufacturers care about car maintenance past the same point. It doesn't make them money so they stop making the parts, sounds like sensible business decisions to me.

Just buy a new R8 instead... oh!
