Mechanic has poked around the Zoe and agrees it is the compressor that's the source of the noise. He'll price up the parts and we'll take it from there.
I think the compressor still works, but there's likely internal damage. Let's see.
I'm not particularly impressed with it. It is on 55k miles, and it shouldn't have this many issues.

Skoda Superb sold after 7 trusty years and a relatively low 60k odd faultless miles. Bought for 14k, sold for 7.4, not too offensive. Other than servicing and two glow plugs 0 issues.
Now gay and drive a Tesla Y. Initial impressions are good, base rwd model but still circa 300bhp. Bought 3 year old via Tesla, painless experience. Other than the stupid lower seat vents that collect stones nothing negative to report.
