Insurance question.

Post by Gavin »

My wife was rear-ended (yes, very funny fnar) and the car will need repairs. The nice 60 year old lady who skelped her does not want to go through insurance which is fine by me but just for a new bumper painted we are looking at £750 or so.

She may decide to go through insurance who will likely try and write my car off. Can I insist on a repair as the car has had a lot spent on it and I would rather not start again.

I bought my written off R19 16v from the insurance company after someone drove into the side of me. They valued it at £950 (cool, I’d bought it for that a year earlier), I agreed £50 for the car, so I got a £900 payout and kept it. i then sold it on for £400!

When MrsREV had her £450 Peugeot some bloke drove into her in the car park. His insurance company offered us £850 to settle in full. We ripped their arms off accepting that. No writing off, we carried on using the car.

You’re damned if you go through insurance and you’re at the mercy of someone else if you don’t. If they’ve not been forth coming with the cash within a week of the incident then go through your insurance company, if you leave it too long the insurance co don’t want to know.

Has he asked her for the money yet? There's a step missing in the threads above.

As it was my wife she hit they have been going back and forth between them.

We sent her the cost of just a new bumper and respray and a basic estimate of fitting etc of around £750. She replied saying go ahead, I hate insurance, I will pay you back.

I have just sent an e-mail explaining I will not be getting work done and paying for it. I have offered to take it to a body shop, get a proper quotation for any and all work and she can pay against that but no effing way am I betting on her not being a scum bag.

I did word it more politely of course! :D

I will need to take it to local body shop I think, get a price for that entire area to be repaired and watch her faint! If the three quarter panel is not repairable that would add a huge cost although I suspect it might polish out.

What a pita. The lady is off on holiday soon and we go in two weeks so really don't want it hanging.

If you get 750 off her then well done but I’d try and get a couple hundred and fix it myself. If you go through insurance for that it will probably cost you more than the repair long term with increased premiums.
How about not having a sig at all?

My ideal solution would be an in lieu payment as close to the £750 as I can get and then get a second hand bumper on myself adn save the £600 for the other repairs that will inevitably need done!

When she realised £750 was the minimum she has referred us to her insurers and admitted liability and we should have an engineer out to assess repair v write off and they seem happy with a cash settlement in lieu of actual repairs, or a category N write off and I just give them a few quid for the car and then fix myself.

Some Engineer is due today to value the repair at less that the value of the car to avoid a right off (I hope).
