Colapinto nearly binned it doing burnouts when he pulled up to that. Power looks peaky

Few bits of f1 merch in tkmaxx at the moment. Picked up an Alonso T-shirt for £20. Mrs. got an alpine one, they also had redbull and v-carb stuff too plus a couple of f1 branded ones

Yes mentions that they drive like old turbo F1 cars for a few seconds when you press the throttle - first few wet races will get the younger drivers growing hair on their arse

He was offered a test publically on a tv broadcast in response to his “it’s like formula e on steroids” comment

Yeah, and there’s actually a car available.. but the fact he has taken up the offer is the significant point, I think

I don’t think he has? The invite was for this weekend as Formula E was close to F1 but haven’t heard anything about it. I think FE is in a bad place in terms of popularity, they’ve opened it up to influencers and are willing to try anything to get some traction.

Just another thought, if cars are taking 10+ seconds to pull away briskly surely that’s going to be quite a safety concern when cars spin and stop across the track?

Just how slowly do they pull away with no pre spooling? I presume spin turns aren’t possible at all?

10 (+?) seconds to spool up the turbot is just rondinculous? Are they running twentington bar of boost or what?

That’s why they have hazard lights this year

Yeah, I don’t really get how it works (or doesn’t) I watch races and watch the odd YouTube vid, but haven’t studied every technicality of their design.

I don’t really get why they have to sit there revving so long. I mean it doesn’t take that long for the dustbin size ones on tractor pulling diesels which only have the job of a flat out straight line run for about 10 seconds, where you’d think an f1 engine would have to have some sort of response and tractability even over a tiny window.

It can’t just be about charging the battery because surely they’d be doing that on the way to the start so by the time they roll up to a grid spot it would be ready anyway.

It reminds me of air brake equipped vehicles that have been parked for a while and have lost the air from the tanks. Start the engine and hold the revs until the brakes release and you can drive away.

Reading more about it seems like it’s a culmination of factors. The engines have stricter fuel flow limits and produce much less gas flow. The removal of the MGUH means there’s no way of spinning the turbo electrically.
The ICE engine is down 200bhp compared to last year!
They are still single turbo configuration. No electrical deployment below 50 km/h. I can’t see whether that is for just launching from a standing start or at all times.
The turbos are designed for top end power and efficiency and basically do nothing at the low end.

The ridiculous thing in all this is that the tech in many road cars is far more advanced with electrically assisted turbos, hybrid torque fill at launch, sequential turbos etc…

Does seem like a ridiculous hobbling of the potential in the cars - let's delete the MGUH as not road relevant but engineer something where you need to boost the engine before setting off as that's much more road relevant.

Current Porsche 911 has a MGUH! Audi didn't want it because it made the engines too complicated
Ironically Audi road cars whilst not having a MGUH have used electrically assisted turbos for over 10 years.

So F1 have managed to go from vaguely road car relevant to so far backwards that it can't be considered for road cars
