track day insurance

Planning to go to the Evo Doningtonevening session in June.

The insurance quote is over £500 and a £5.2k excess, genuinely more than I pay for a full year on the road, which surprised me.

Im sure I paid about £200 for a year on my mx5, appreciate that was circa 20 years ago on a much lower value car.

Is that about normal these days, or does it sound steep? Do most of you bother insuring for a single evening, or do you just accept the risk and drive within your limits? Any recommendations?

I've never bothered. If it's a well run event and you can keep a level head the risk is minimal IMO

Does the Track Day insurance cover your car if you're hit by someone else and they DON'T have Track Day Insurance ??

Presumably it does and they just chase the other guy for the money ??

Im not sure they can go after 3rd parties tracks days are pretty much at your own risk?

I expect there are too many variables for people to really advise on the value of that quote - unless they do loads of trackdays in different vehicles (And most folks who do lots of track days seek out normal insurance that also covers......track days).

I used Moris for Anglesey previously - their quote was the best I could find for dedicated cover.

At the recent Alpine promotional day at Knockhill that ScottA got me into, the blurb had suggested they'd let existing Alpine owners take their cars on track for two open sessions. Didn't believe I qualified (and hadn't prepped/checked the car) but when I turned up they were happy for owners to take any car on. Based on the fact that I'd be on-track with Scott, plus just one other car - I considered the risk as low, and took the Evora out for a few laps, but wasn't properly pushing.....

What Tim says is true - as long as you are OK to personally cover a £large bill if the shit and the fan interface does occur.

That was my understanding from my policies in the past. Everyone insures themselves, but you can't claim from 3rd parties in the event of an accident.

This is a Trackday Accidental Damage policy designed to cover damage to your car in the event you have an accident on the circuit during the course of your trackday. You are covered if:

Although I'm unlikely to ever need to consider track day insurance as I'm unlikely to have a car that you would want on a track

That was my reason for getting a quote, although you would hope an Evo evening isnt full of people who cant drive, or worse, people that cant handle the power of their stage 3 Audi s3.

Im only paying £260/year to insure the car, I was expecting a track day to be half that at the most.

I have read enough to know that all you need to do is let them know, which I have done and they thanked me for letting them know.

I’d actually discussed going to that track day with ScottA a few weeks back - some others we know are going (Maurice in his GT4 Arse possibly, maybe BenB?). If it had been a full day I’d have been interested, but it’s a long way for just an evening session…..
